Black Swan eyeliner is officially a 2022 'thing' and if you've missed it, look to the likes of Julia Fox's most recent statement beauty look and the double wings applied to models backstage at Chanel's couture show this week. And in case you were wondering, Kanye might be making headlines for dictating Julia's fashion ensembles, but her Black Swan liner? That was all Dame Pat McGrath.
Needless to say, this liner look is not for the faint-hearted. The trend's namesake Natalie Portman paired the original graphic design with red contact lenses in the most famous promotional images of 2011's ballet-centric movie release Black Swan. Julia paired her own iteration with slicked back hair, otherwise pared back make-up and a pair of OTT gold earrings.
Kanye was pictured touching up Pat's work on Julia's Instagram and that's ballsy. Few presume to interfere with the work of 'The Mother'.
Chanel also chose to dip into the Black Swan eyeliner trend for their couture show in Paris this week. Chanel's take is a touch softer, and the double liner flick less extended. If you're looking for a more wearable version of Black Swan eyes that still packs a punch, look no further.
Prefer something decidedly more subtle? Take inspiration from Euphoria. The lead make-up designer on the show, Doniella Davy, took to social media last week to show her followers how Maddy's signature double-winged liner is done. It's both delicate and sharp, a must-try look for those who want to add an edge to their make-up without straying too far out of their comfort zone.
Donni even went so far as to share a how-to tutorial:
You'll see that the make-up artist has plenty of cotton buds at her disposal, as well as oil-free make-up remover - mistakes are part of the process - and, of course, a jet black liner. Keen to give Black Swan liner a go at home? Shop the kit essentials below:
