To mark her 40th birthday on Sunday 9th January the Duchess of Cambridge released a set of brand new portraits shot by renowned photographer Paolo Roversi. In a recent interview with Italian title Corriere della Serra, Roversi revealed that Prince William, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis all helped to decide on the final three. Styled by Sarah Burton, creative director of Alexander McQueen, who the Duchess also turned to for her wedding dress, one of the gowns was a scarlet, one shoulder number with pockets.

As for the hair and make-up, the identity of the pros responsible for the looks seems a closely guarded secret, but what's certain is that these images mark a real departure from the tried-and-tested formula that the Duchess has adhered to in recent years - think glossy blow-dries, dark eyeliner and subtly blushed cheeks. Her make-up looks minimal in Roversi's shots - just a hint of eyeshadow is discernible - though that could be down to Roversi's photography technique. He told Corriere della Serra that he took almost every shot in black and white.

Hair wise, the styling shake-up is plain for all to see. The Duchess' usually shine-laden, side-parted hair is seen waved, tousled and pulled back from her face, a move that had social media detectives the world over debating whether the images had been flipped in post production - her parting had changed sides - shock, horror!

According to Jake Wanstall, stylist at Larry King Hair, 'the Duchess in fact has no obvious parting at all in these images,' Wanstall continues, 'her waves are far more random and sporadic than usual too. They're much less polished. The style makes the most of her natural texture. It's a much softer look.' If you're keen to emulate at home and have a similar hair type to the Duchess, scroll down. Wanstall has given Grazia lowdown on how to achieve the very same look at home:

How To Achieve Kate Middleton's 2022 Waves At Home

1 - 'Spritz a volumising mist through damp hair before reaching for your hair dryer,' says Wanstall. Try the Larry King Volumizing Hair Mist, £29.

2 - 'Start by rough-drying your hair,' advises Wanstall. That means drying through with a hair dryer and making no attempt to smooth as you do so. Tip your head upside down, put your hairdryer on the medium setting and blast away. 'This gives you the most root lift and volume,' says Wanstall.

3 - 'Use a curling tong or curling wand to create waves through your hair,' says Wanstall, 'the front sections of your hair should always be waved away from your face.'

4 - 'Let your waves cool, tip your head upside down again and run your fingers through your lengths, tousling as you go,' says Wanstall, 'this ensures your waves look undone and effortless. Finish with a little bit of Larry King's A Social Life For Your Hair, £12, through your ends to define.'

'This hair look is unstructured, you should be able to run your hands through it and move it from side to side without disrupting the style,' says Wanstall, 'it's free and soft.'
