Looking to dye your hair? Consider black - it's timeless, chic and forever on trend - it's still ranking high in the biggest hair colour trends of 2023 alongside celebrity-loved shades of auburn, copper, the list goes on.
Last year, Paris Hilton swapped her signature blonde for a jet black hair colour, similarly Charlize Theron kicked off summer 2022 with the deep hair hue, flipping the 'lighter hair colour for summer' rule on its head. The early Kardashian era had the masses booking in a black hair colour appointment too, thanks to Kourtney, Kim and Khloe’s naturally dark lengths. Since then, the Kardashians and Jenners of the world have routinely reverted to black after random bouts of hair colour play.
More recently, with the release of Netflix’s Wednesday, we’ve seen many toying with onyx in an attempt to bear a resemblance with Jenna Ortega’s modern take on the iconic Wednesday Addams. In fact, according to Domenico Casella senior stylist and colourist, Neville Hair & Beauty, 'Goth beauty is proving particularly popular at the moment due to a combination of factors. The first is the recent release of the Wednesday Adams series on Netflix. Then we have the resurgence of the #vampy look on TikTok, and finally the Grammy Awardsred carpet with many celebrities like Doja Cat and Hannah Monds opting for dark looks.'
If all that is enough to turn you, note: depending on your natural hair colour, going black can be a big responsibility. Firstly, know that there isn't just one shade of inky black out there, there's every shade between blue-toned black and deep violet-black to choose from. A good colourist will guide you through them during a hair colour consultation.
It's also important to note, 'despite how striking the results can be, jet black colour is artificial and has a tendency to oxidise and fade quickly, meaning that your hair may quickly turn to an unwanted brassy tone. In order to preserve the hue and cold tone of black, you are likely to need your hair toning regularly,' Domenico explains.
Another key consideration? Be aware that black isn't reversible and the journey back to your natural colour can be long and painful thanks to the maintenance involved, especially if your base colour is light. Domenico also warns that you should stay clear of box dyes and always leave this job to the pros. 'During your consultation your colourist will be able to advise whether or not going black will suit your facial features (skin tone and eye colour), if it will suit your lifestyle and of course carry out the much needed patch test to ensure you are not sensitive to the pigment.'
