Copper hair has become one of the most popular colour appointment choices of the last year and it's not hard to see why. With its rich, warm tones, copper hair suits pretty much every skin tone. Whether you're a brunette wanting to brighten up your lengths, or a blonde who's craving more of a statement look, copper is a hair colour winner.
Don't believe us? Take your cues from the A-listers. Everyone from Kendall Jenner, Zendaya, Gigi Hadid and Sydney Sweeney have experimented with copper hair in recent years and the trend doesn't seem to be going anywhere soon.
'Copper hair is really popular right now,' says celebrity hairdresser Bernardo Vasconcelos, 'and if you're wary of going all out, a copper balayage look is the perfect way to add a warmer colour palette to your hair this season.'

The Best Hair Products For Keeping Copper Hair Colour Vibrant
'There are a few things to remember when trying copper hair,' says Adam Reed, UK Editorial Ambassador for L’Oréal Professionnel. 'Firstly, absolutely go to your salon and see a professional. It's important that you get a really good copper pigment so it lasts, as copper tends to fade a lot quicker than other colours.'
'Secondly, I really recommend using a shampoo and conditioner designed for coloured hair specifically,' says Adam, 'a range I have been using on clients for years and love is the L’Oréal Professionnel Serie Expert Vitamino Colour collection. It will lock in that gorgeous copper colour for longer. The [L’Oréal Professionnel Vitamino Colour 10-in-1 Spray]{href='https://www.lookfantastic.com/l-oreal-professionnel-serie-expert-vitamino-color-10-in-1-multi-purpose-spray-190ml/12265834.html' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener' class='add-referrer-link'} is a must try too. It's a multi-benefit spray and detangles, protects against heat, reduces frizz, holds colour. I could go on.'
How To Choose The Right Copper Hair Colour For You
It can be tricky to figure out which kind of red hair shade will suit you best. When considering a copper hair switch-up, looking at your skin's undertone can be really helpful.
'Your undertone is not the same as your skin tone or colour and it won’t change with age or the sun,' explains Cliphair stylist Lynn Chambers. 'It can make a huge difference when choosing what hair colour will suit you, particularly when it comes to copper.'
Copper Hair Colours For Cool Skin Tones
'If you’ve got cool undertones, lighter or pink-toned reds will work best for you. The colour will bring out the pinkness in your cheeks to create a natural blush. Plus, as cool undertones often have flecks of blue or grey in their eyes, it will bring out the brightness there too. A light auburn or a strawberry blonde will look great on fair skin, or a luxurious plum or cherry red is perfect for darker skin tone,' says Lynn.
Copper Hair Colours For Warm Skin Tones
'Golden, coppery colours will bring out the warmth in your skin and brighten your complexion,' suggests Lynn, multi-dimensional highlights, or a soft balayage with hints of creamy blonde will be perfect. Try a mahogany or deep cinnamon with darker roots, or a natural-looking ginger red.'
Copper Hair Colours For Neutral Skin Tones
'Neutral undertones have the most options when it comes to red hair because they’ll suit pretty much anything. From a blue-toned almost purple, to the brightest neon orange – and even the ambiguous and romantic strawberry blonde. As with all shades, you want as much dimension as possible to avoid the colour looking flat, so go for something that will bring out a little warmth and brightness,' says Lynn.
