We might only be one week into August, but if you're ready for the return of dark and gloomy nights, look no further than Netflix, where season two of Wednesday has just been released.

Tim Burton's remake of The Addams Family follows Wednesday (played by none other than Jenna Ortega) as she continues her education at Nevermore Academy, where fresh woes await - and it's more twisted than ever. 'This season, Wednesday’s journey is darker and more complex as she navigates family, friends, new mysteries, and old adversaries, propelling her headlong into another year at Nevermore,' co-showrunners and executive producers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar tell Tudum.

When the season one of Wednesday aired in 2022, it became an unexpected cultural phenomenon, amassing over 252 million views. But how does season two match up? The reviews are in - and just as we did with Echo Valley, Too Much, The Waterfront and The Bear season four – we've broken them down...

What are the reviews of Wednesday season two?

Already, the reviews for season two of Wednesday are flooding in - and, judging by what the critics are saying, it's worth watching. The Guardian gave the series four stars, with critic Sarah Dempster writing 'In the middle of it all, meanwhile, is Ortega’s Wednesday, whose charisma could power a thousand hearses.'

The Radio Times also gave the show four stars, acknowledging how season two managed to navigate the hype of the first run. 'Season 2 does exactly what a second season should. It builds on what made the first so popular while improving on what didn't work, like a new and improved Frankenstein creation that stitches stronger flesh to the skeleton of where we began,' writes critic David Opie.

The Independent gave season two of Wednesday three stars. Critic Annabel Nugent wrote that at it's heart, the show is 'frightfully formulaic,' adding 'a fish out of water, coming of age tale with a side helping of murder mystery and scoop of the supernatural for good measure. Soap opera machinations drive the plot exactly where you think, when you think.'

The Telegraph went with four stars for the show, writing 'A near three-year delay would have killed off a lesser show, but Wednesday’s murderously enjoyable second season proves worth the wait.'

What is Wednesday season two about?

In season two, we see Wednesday's worlds colliding, with her family, Morticia, Gomez and Pugsley, becoming more involved in Nevermore. 'This year, we bring the family to Nevermore,' director and executive producer Tim Burton told Netflix's Tudum. 'Your family at school is the worst thing possible, isn’t it?'

Pugsley, her little brother, arrives at Nevermore and finds it hard keeping his powers under control, while her parents have even more reasons to be on campus. We also meet Wednesday's 'formidable' Grandma, Hester Frump. On top of that, Wednesday is dealing with hew own new found fame on campus - while also navigating her mystery stalker that was introduced at the end of the last series, and plenty more woeful goings on behind the Nevermore gates.

When is Wednesday season two released?

The first four parts of Wednesday season two is available to stream on Netflix now! But binge watchers will have to wait a little while before the next episodes are released. The second part of Wednesday season 2 is out on Netflix on Wednesday 3rd September.
