Watching Love Island, we almost always expect our past traumas of toxic men to be triggered at some point or another. This season though, it’s every episode, every man, every scene. That’s right, in what’s fast becoming the worst examples of male behaviour in Love Island history – apart from a token few that will forever scar us (you know who you are) – Casa Amor has taken the fu*kboyery to new levels this week.
First it was Jake Cornish calling his three days away from his GIRLFRIEND Liberty Poole ‘the ultimate test’, then Teddy Soares admitting he could be swayed from villa Queen Faye Winter as she pines for him at home, and of course – the worst betrayal of them all, Liam Reardon forgetting Millie Court exists by the mere presence of a blonde woman that looks exactly like her – and whose name RHYMES with hers. Honestly, you can’t make this shit up.
It’s become apparent then, as we watch this week’s episode behind pillows, that we must turn to previous seasons for examples of male behaviour we can appreciate – if, of course, we ever want to trust another man again.
Enter Tommy Fury, the blueprint of love and loyalty, who has quickly become the centre of Casa Amor commentary despite not actually being there. If you need an example, you need only check out Molly-Mae Hague’s liked tweets – bless her heart – because they’re filled with everyone comparing the actions of this year’s men to Tommy’s.
If you can’t remember – and why would you, there’s been a whole global pandemic since then that’s kind of been on our minds – Tommy entered Casa Amor around a week after he and Molly-Mae got through that whole Maura Higgins rough patch. When packing his case, Molly sent him her elephant teddy (the beloved Ellie Belly) that he lovingly slept with every night, outside away from any and all female attention, even holding it during the recoupling when they were reunited.
When you read it like that, it’s yet another reminder that the bar for Love Island men is truly lower than low – but the fact remains that Tommy’s actions are so far from those of this season’s men, they genuinely are being celebrated online. While it’s the bare-minimum Molly deserved, his loyalty to her serves as a reminder that there are a few (read: 3) men out there that won’t feel the need to cheat on you in order to ‘test’ your bond together. They might even, and this is wild, MISS you a little bit when you’re away.
We shouldn’t need to revisit the ghosts of Love Island good boys past to know this, but given the absolute dire straits of the male cast this year – it seems we’ve been forced to. So long live the Prince Charming of Casa Amor, may your spirit enter the hearts of Liam and Teddy before they ruin our faith in love entirely.
