Since Miranda controversially began an affair with Carrie’s boss Che in episode five of And Just Like That, the internet has been howling cries of justice for her husband so relentlessly that there’s now a fully-fledged Justice For Steve movement online.
It isn’t just Miranda’s cheating that has been frustrating Steve stans. Fans have also taken umbrage with the way David Eigenberg’s character has been depicted as a pitiable old man at 50, with constant references to his hearing aid and inability to pleasure his wife.
And it turns out that the Justice For Steve movement started long before And Just Like That fans took to Twitter. According to the reboot’s writers, the female cast and crew members on set sided with Steve from the start.
‘We were filming the scene between Miranda and Steve [and] somebody in the crew made buttons,’ revealed the series’ creator Michael Patrick King on the And Just Like That…The Writers Room podcast{
But while Eigenberg’s character may have had the full support of the And Just Like That female workforce, the actor himself characteristically pledged his allegiance to Team Miranda... Excuse us while we sob.
After decades of watching Steve and Miranda’s relationship spark, grow, fail and flourish, it’s understandable that crew and fans alike have gone into mourning and become defensive of their respective sides. This break up has made us all children of the same divorce.
And rehearsing the confession scene between Miranda and Steve broke the hearts of the And Just Like That actors, too. ‘That table read, not a dry eye,’ revealed writer Rachna Fruchbom as she attempted to appease fans that this wasn’t the end for the couple.
‘The binary of Team Miranda or Team Steve doesn’t have to be it,’ Fruchbom explained. ‘There can be this new chapter and they can still raise Brady together…There might be future happiness for both of them that’s greater than the one that they’ve been having together.’
While this is a rational and mature point of view to have on the situation, it’s hard to accept that the Steve and Miranda era is finally over. We will always have a place in our hearts for Steve’s tiny glasses, Brooklyn accent and his ultimately crushed belief that Miranda is worth fighting for.
