John Travolta was visibly emotional during the Oscars on Sunday night as he paid tribute to his friend and Grease co-star Olivia Newton-John.
The actor - who played Danny Zuko in the 70s cult classic - presented the In Memoriam segment, which honoured some of Hollywood's greatest stars who passed away this last year. Olivia - John's love interest Sandy Olsson in Grease - died in August aged 73, following a battle with breast cancer.
John, 69, introduced the late celebrities being celebrated and gave a special nod to Olivia's solo ballad in Grease. 'Each of them left an indelible mark that shared and informed us. They’ve touched our hearts, they’ve made us smile, and became dear friends, who we we will always remain hopelessly devoted to.'
Choking on his words, John found the strength to welcome Lenny Kravitz to the stage.
The singer performed his 2004 hit Calling All Angels on the piano as a commemorative video played, featuring industry professionals such as Ray Liotta, Angelo Badalamenti and Jean-Luc Goddard.
'That was truly genuine. Losing a lifelong friend is incredibly hard,' an empathetic viewer wrote online of John's display of emotion.
'It was really hard to watch him break, I hope he got a hug after,' another wrote.
While a third emotionally penned, 'The minute I saw John Travolta walk out I knew what was coming and I still wasn’t prepared for his speech.'
Olivia - also known for her astonishing music career, which made her a four-time Grammy winner - died peacefully at her South California home surrounded by family and friends.
Her husband John Easterling announced her death on her Facebook page at the time.
'Dame Olivia Newton-John (73) passed away peacefully at her Ranch in Southern California this morning, surrounded by family and friends. We ask that everyone please respect the family's privacy during this very difficult time.
'Olivia has been a symbol of triumphs and hope for over 30 years sharing her journey with breast cancer.
'Her healing inspiration and pioneering experience with plant medicine continues with the Olivia Newton-John Foundation Fund, dedicated to researching plant medicine and cancer,' he said.
