Oh Faye Winter, our villa queen full of strange quips and thrilling chaos. She’s been a fan favourite for a while now, not just because of her intriguing one-liners but also her budding relationship with Teddy Soares. It’s one of the few relationships on the show that feels genuine, and so naturally, Faye is set on ruining it.
We say naturally with love, because many of us have too been in her shoes: you know, size 6 in self-sabotage? Last night, the 26-year-old began doubting whether her and Teddy had a real future – citing differences between their taste in music, clothes and worrying whether his kind temperament will fit in with her ‘brutal’ family. Most heartbreakingly, she also confessed: ‘Maybe I just think I’m not good enough for him.’
Viewers spotted the pattern of self-sabotage immediately. Faye has admitted she struggles trusting men generally, and that she has her guard up high due to past heartbreak. But things have been going good for her and Teddy since getting over the Casa Amor obstacle, with the islander clearly building up to ask her to be his girlfriend.
What does any wounded woman do in the face of true, uncomplicated love then? RUN. RUN FAR AWAY. That’s what fans on social media are saying anyway – seeing through Faye’s doubts as an attempt to ruin her own happiness before he does it for her.
Her defence-mechanisms reared their head later too, after Teddy was subject to a particularly savage ‘move night’ clip where Faye told the other girls he ‘might not be funny’. Back then, she seemed to be reacting to him potentially hurting her in Casa Amor – but without that context Teddy was clearly wounded himself by the dig. Instead of consoling him, Faye laughed in what appeared to be an attempt to play the incident down.
Either that, or just as she was clearly self-destructing earlier in the day, her fear that he will leave her rang like alarm bells and so she acted unbothered by the entire incident – as if he was somehow overreacting. It’s not fair on Teddy, that much is true, but having been in Faye’s shoes before, it’s also not fair to hate her for what is clearly a reaction to past heartbreak. The saying ‘hurt people hurt people’ sounds cliché, but it rings true on this occasion: and for that Faye needs empathy and understanding.
She has that in Teddy though; we saw it when she opened up about her fears from earlier in the day – prior to the movie night challenge causing its destruction. Choosing to trust him with her ‘wobble’, she honestly communicated her doubts and Teddy - with patience and understanding of where they were really coming from - validated her. For the first time in Love Island history, we got to see a genuinely healthy interaction between a man and woman working through their emotional baggage.
The conversation bodes well for their compatibility, which is why it was so painful to watch producers ‘test’ their bond with the brutal move night clip. Hopefully, it will be the last test that’s forced upon them, because if our experiences of trusting after heartbreak have taught us anything, they’ll have enough of their own to come.
