We're addicted, but admittedly Love Island isn’t always realistic. While the show kickstarts important conversations about modern dating, for the most part, it isn’t relatable. (After all, who has eight weeks to prance around in swimwear, cracking on, for their share of £50k.)
However, last night, when the remaining couples' families finally entered the villa, we all saw a painfully relatable moment - when your parents quite obviously don’t approve of your new partner. Apart from, even worse, they don’t actually tell you that - they just hope you work it out yourself.
(We also saw another incredibly relatable moment, which was when all the mums tried to go after Ovie.)
Curtis' mum, for a start, just couldn’t pronounceMaura’s name, calling her Moira - repeatedly. (Which may, or may not, have been a sly dig.)
But that was nothing like Maura’s mum, who made her distaste in her daughter’s partner incredibly clear.
When Maura asked her mum what she thought of the professional ballroom dancer, she used the most ambivalent adjective available, calling him ‘nice’, aka mum talk for the complete opposite.
‘I trust in your judgement - and I know you’re not a bad judge of character,’ she continued.
‘There’s obviously something you see in him.
‘I’ve never ever turned around to ya and said, “I don’t trust your judgement”, I do. You know that.
‘If you’re happy, I’m happy. You do what’s best for you, at the end of the day.’
And what have we gleaned from this idiom riddled talk? That Maura’s mum, without hurting her feelings on national television, just doesn’t think Curtis is the best choice for her daughter.
(And, really, is it any surprise after the way he treated Amy?)
She even added, ‘if there’s something not right, you will act on it,’ code for, ‘you will know when to break up with him. And hopefully, that’s soon.’
As the old saying goes, mums always know best; if her reaction is anything to go by - then Curtis and Maura probably won’t stick together on the outside.
