Last night’s Love Island proved nothing entices viewers like a bit of inter-Islander bitching, with the entire villa seemingly turning on Jessie Wynter after she questioned Casey O’Gorman upsetting her partner, Will Young. Almost out of nowhere, Islander’s began raising concerns about how ‘genuine’ Jessie’s intentions are – much to the dismay of Will, but excitement of Love Island fans waiting for the drama to ramp up.
In fact, the saga went on for so long it was the focus of the entire episode, with viewers left wondering at the end: What has Jessie actually done wrong? Well, allow us to start at the beginning. Casey took issue with Will and Tom Clare trying to make his now ex-partner Claudia Fogarty feel better during the ‘snog, marry, pie challenge’ – he thought their allegiance should solely lie with him.
After confronting the boys, Will told Jessie who decided it was a ridiculous reason to be annoyed with the boys because they were only trying to give Claudia a much-needed confidence boost. She aired her thoughts to Casey, who decided that not only should she not have an opinion on the matter, but it was also the wrong time to share it with him after an already emotional night.
Frankly, it’s all a bit much about nothing, but soon enough the entire villa was weighing in on whether or not Jessie was right to pull Casey – and after some choice remarks from Olivia Hawkins and Maxwell Samuda about Jessie’s character, everyone began questioning whether she’s on the show purely to ramp up drama versus finding real love.
It begs the question, have islanders been waiting for a moment to jump on the Jessie hate-wagon? It certainly seems like Casey wanted a reason to question her intentions, the 26-year-old bringing up Jessie for an entire day after the original conversation, with almost every Islander in the villa. Watching it as a viewer, it felt uncomfortable seeing groups form just to talk about Jessie behind her back, not one person pulling her aside to let her know the ’whispers’ that were going round the villa. As Will aptly put it, everyone was ‘moooving like snakes.’
Frankly, the entire debacle proves that Jessie’s assertion about contestants not being able to voice their thoughts properly is very real. How is it that islanders have taken more issue with her speaking to Casey face to face, than everyone bitching behind her back? Hell, if we’re going to look at genuine intentions here, we’d say the person that can openly tell you their opinions to your face is much less drama-obsessed than the ones whispering every episode about other islanders ‘intentions’.
Regardless of whether you believe Jessie’s intentions or not, it’s never nice seeing the entire villa talk about one person negatively – perhaps they should take a leaf out of Jessie’s book and actually pull her for a chat.
