When watching Inventing Anna{
And boy, sometimes it's difficult to tell what's fiction and what's reality, as some of the script seems too unbelievable to be real. Anna stealing a plane! Anna having a stylist for her court hearings! Yet one of the most bizarre moments of all is when Anna crashes on the sofa at fellow convicted scammer Billy McFarland's house.
But it turns out this plot twist was legit: it turns out Anna did actually know Billy, the man behind the infamous Fyre Festival in 2017. Back in 2013, she even lived with him in the headquarters of his credit card company, Magnise.
In the series, Anna, played by Julia Garner, might have laughed at investing in Billy's plan - but as reported by The Cut in 2018, she might have even scammed him, too. (Scammers sure love to stick together, huh.)
You probably haven't forgotten, but Billy - played by Ben Rappaport - became an international name for all the wrong reasons back in 2017, after his luxury festival, cofounded by rapper JaRule, became a total mess. Instead of luxurious food and accommodation to accompany a huge party, attendees who paid thousands of dollars were shocked to find tents as their accommodation and sad cheese sandwiches. (There's also more mention of the festival later in the series when Neff's boyfriend is later scrolling through the memes on his iPad.) After being arrested in 2018, Billy is now currently serving a six-year prison sentence.
And as for Anna, in May 2019, she was sentenced to four to 12 years in prison on grand larceny and theft services charges, however she was released on good behaviour in February 2021. But, a month later, in March 2021, she was arrested by immigration authorities for overstaying her visa.
