Ever since the announcement was made that Sally Rooney's debut novel, Conversations With Friends, would be adapted for TV, we have been eagerly anticipating its arrival. This week, the long wait finally came to an end after the first episodes aired on BBC Three and the entire series dropped on iPlayer. Rejoice!

Obviously, we knew from watching Normal Peoplethat we were in for an intense ride: sex scenes, deep feelings and complex dynamics between characters. However, there's one particular aspect to the show that really captured the internet's attention - Joe Alwyn.

The actor – and boyfriend ofTaylor Swift – has made a big impression. It's not all been positive, with some people criticising his attempt at an Irish accent. The internet even drew similarities toLiam Payne's questionable accent at the Oscars.

On Sunday, ahead of the first episode, Joe's other half Taylor publicly expressed support for her boyfriend in a rare Instagram Story post. She shared a Time's magazine review of the new series on her stories with the caption, 'Can confirm it's phenomenal,' and added that the series is 'out now.' It debuted later the day.

Plenty of people are saying they now understand his and Taylor Swift's six-year relationship.

Fans have even highlighted how perfect his portrayal of Nick is in the drama series:

However, not everyone is on board with his accent.

Conversations with Friends follows 21-year-old Frances (Alison Oliver), a college student and aspiring writer, and her best friend, the self-possessed Bobbi (Sasha Lane). Lovers at school, the two young women now perform spoken-word poetry together in Dublin, where Melissa (Jemima Kirke) spots their potential and becomes fascinated with them.'

Melissa is married to Nick (Joe Alwyn) and he and Frances embark on an intense, secret affair. Drama ensues.
