If you watched Comic Relief last night (or even if you didn't) you might know by now that the 90's classic 'Four Weddings And A Funeral' received a thoroughly modern makeover last night.
Where to begin? Entitled 'One Red Nose Day and a Wedding' The 15-minute special saw Hugh Grant offering to order Lily James an Uber ('I could just order you an Uber') mega-influencer Tanya Burr making a cameo as a bridesmaid and even an Ed-Sheeran inspired speech, which we predict means that a LOT of upcoming nuptials are going to be discarding Corinthians 13. At the end, we were also treated to a speech from the 'Best Woman' (is anyone else feeling some incredible 2019 wedding trend alerts?)
But the part that has everyone on the internet talking last night - and this morning - is the fact that the 15-minute special centred around the same-sex marriage between Lily James and Alicia Vikander, who played the daughters of Charles and Fiona (Hugh Grant and Kristen Scott-Thomas), departing from the heterosexual story line that defined the original Four Weddings.
The special saw James and Vikander tell the story of their relationship in their vows (from the moment they met as the daughters of Grant and Scott-Thomas), be wed by Rowan Atkinson, and then followed through to the wedding reception where another same-sex couple made an appearance as Angus (Timothy Walker) arrived, introducing his husband.
Does this herald a 2019 trend for more representation and celebration of LBTQ relationships and characters on our screens and as a part of the main storylines? Let's hope so. In the meantime (obviously) Twitter had some amazing reactions to the special.
The mini-sequel re-visited some classic characters from Four Weddings__ including__ Rowan Atkinson, the blundering and verbally incontinent priest (the 'Holy Spigot' line even got a revival moment), and reminded us how much we loved Hugh Grant and Andie Macdowell as an on-screen couple.
At the end all of the characters left the reception decorated in Comic Relief red noses. The special helped to raise a staggering £63m for Comic Relief, but the question we all have now is when are we going to get the full-length sequel featuring Alicia Vikander and Lily James? Can someone start a petition?
