The trailer for the ninth episode of And Just Like That is out and it looks like there’s a lot of drama to come in the show’s penultimate instalment: Carrie goes on another date with Peter (after that horrifying vomit incident), Miranda challenges Che on the status of their relationship, and Charlotte struggles to understand Lily’s hormonal mood swings.
But one thing we didn’t expect to see in the trailer is Carrie and Steve spending time alone together following his split from Miranda. Presumably in Steve’s new apartment, the pair are seen painting the bachelor pad as he questions Carrie about his wife’s affair. ‘How long ago did this thing start?’ he asked. ‘You’ve got to know!’
In the scene, Carrie is (as ever) wearing gorgeous but impractical footwear. Losing her balance in her metallic silver platform heels, she topples into a tray of white paint and Steve rushes to kneel down and help her.
But is this chivalrous? Or is this flirting? We don’t often see Steve and Carrie alone in scenes together and some people think there are some serious vibes radiating through the screen.
‘This may sound crazy, but I’m shipping Carrie and Steve,’ wrote one Twitter user as they praised the potential romance. ‘Okay how would we feel is Steve and Carrie ended up together?’ another asked tentatively.
Well, we wouldn’t feel great. There are serious politics involved when it comes to staying friends with a pal's ex—let alone dating them. Carrie has known Steve for a long time, but should she be helping him decorate his post-split abode? It opens up a massive can of worms.
If a friendship between Carrie and Steve feels potentially treacherous, a romance feels even worse. Carrie is already godmother to Miranda’s son Brady – she would definitely be stepping on toes if she coupled-up with Steve and became Brady’s step mum.
Steve grilling Carrie about his wife’s affair is awkward and we suspect Miranda wouldn’t take too kindly to Carrie spilling secrets about her relationship with Che. It's a classic piggy in the middle situation.
And, while it would break our hearts to see Steve friendless because of the split, this doesn’t seem likely. He’s personable and fun so surely has a support system that doesn’t include his wife’s best friends? Maybe what the character deserves is space and time to grieve his marriage without the temptation to mine Carrie for information.
While Carrie and Steve share some compatible traits - they both have kind hearts and easily articulate their feelings - their romance would rock the boat of friendship between Carrie and Miranda a step too far. Dare we suggest it’s time for Steve to go and find his ex Debbie instead?
