And Just Like That: Has Miranda’s Drinking Problem Been Dealt With Properly?

Some viewers feel that it's been skimmed over

At the beginning of And Just Like That's unsteady relationship with alcohol was heavily hinted at. Miranda was notably unhappy. It was clear she felt trapped in her sexless marriage to Steve, and she seemed stressed about switching careers and studying for her master's degree in human rights.

The hints became obvious. She was ordering a glass of Chablis in a bar at 10.45am. Then, in episode three, while they were out for coffee, Charlotte found empty mini spirit bottles in her college rucksack - which alarmed the Park Avenue princess so much that she sent Miranda a book on how to stop drinking - Quit Like A Woman! - from Amazon. Miranda was drinking throughout the day - most notably with Che during THAT kitchen scene. Later, in what appears to be a snapshot decision, she chucks her alcohol down the sink.

In support of Miranda, during episode six, Carrie and Charlotte join Miranda for a picnic - where they drink non-alcoholic rosé, and laugh about it not being real wine. But, then, that's it, apparently. It looks like Miranda has conquered her rocky relationship with alcohol, as Charlotte tells her how proud she is of her quitting 'cold turkey'.

While obviously AJLT isn't real, many have pointed out that, and just like that, Miranda's recovery has been oversimplified, and feels unrealistically painless and convenient. This is, conversely, the show which also glamourised alcohol - particularly the holy Cosmo - in the first place. I, like a lot of viewers, feel that perhaps the writers owe us a bit more context to explore the storyline and Miranda's recovery (although, admittedly there could still be more to come), instead of brushing it under the carpet.
