We know he can be a tricksy criminal sort thanks to his work on Sherlock, and Andrew Scott's profile has only grown via Fleabag's "hot priest" and his appearance in the likes of Black Mirrorand Spectre. Scott will now take the lead in a new series, starring in Steven Zaillian's adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's Tom Ripley novels for US cable network Showtime.
Though many will know the character from 1999 movie adaptation The Talented Mr. Ripley, the new series (which has yet to announced a formal name) will explore more sides of the cunning, ambitious Ripley, who features in five of Highsmith's books.
Zaillian is on to direct the first season of eight episodes, which follow the man from 1960s New York to Italy after he’s hired by a wealthy man to retrieve his vagabond son and haul him back to America. Deceit, fraud, murder and palpable sexual tension ensue. The writer/director had been developing the show earlier this year and entertained offers to produce it, with Showtime snapping up the chance to make it.
Scott will be part of Amazon's Modern Love anthology series, which debuts next month. Also on the small screen, he's joined the second season of His Dark Materials, due next year. And in cinemas, he's in the ranks for Sam Mendes' 1917, heading our way on 10 January.
