The Male Nudity In And Just Like That Wasn’t Shocking, Just Overdue

In six series, there was never any sign of a dick - only for the reboot to include two full-frontal scenes in one episode.

(Spoiler alerts, obviously.) The biggest reveal in last week's And Just Like That wasn't that Miranda was leaving Stevewhy they wanted to give Charlotte's husband a 'substantial dick'.

The reason the moment was so big, though, wasn't because of the size (as the writers clarified, it was a prosthetic penis) but, unbelievably, because male nudity is something Sex And The City has only shown once before in the first film. And the writers obviously thought they were on to something, as, later in the episode, we see another dick when Carrie's new neighbour accidentally drops his towel.

On podcast The Writers Room, showrunner Michael Patrick King explained the decision behind showing Harry's penis, just before Charlotte was about to give him a blowjob, saying: 'it wasn't enough for us to have it happen [like] in other TV shows where you never see the dick'.

But up until this point, that was exactly what SATC used to be guilty of. Given the premise of the show, and how many sex scenes there were, it seems completely mad that we're only being given full-frontal male nudity now, in the reboot.

Rewatching the first season of SATC over the weekend, I noticed viewers weren't even shown the offending dick when Carrie's married friend flashes her while she's staying at the Hamptons in episode three. And yet, you'd struggle counting how many times female nudity was seen on the show. For goodness sake, I know some of the boobs on that show better than I know my own.

Somehow, though, the inclusion of male nudity still feels shocking. It was impossible to watch the episode and not notice - as one of my friends watching the show later text me - 'TWO shots of peen?!!' Not to mention, there have been tonnes of headlines about it - with one headline, from one tabloid, claiming that viewers were 'left in shock'. (Kind of accurate, to be honest.)

But it shouldn't be a surprise. It's good there has, finally, been some male nudity on the SATC - even if it's 20 years too late. The reboot has tried to right many of the previous wrongs in the original - most notably with a more diverse cast being introduced - and the inclusion of not one, but two male full-frontal scenes is just another (albeit less important) thing writers are finally solving. Hurrah for Harry and his substantial penis.
