It's no secret that weddings can be expensive.

Not just for the bride and groom, but also for their loved ones who are obliged to shell out for hotels, travel costs, a suitably generous present and, often, a fresh outfit too.

Now a new study has revealed exactly how much Brits are willing to part with, in the name of all things love (well, other people's love).

And it turns out, we're surprisingly generous.

Despite these times of budget cuts and austerity, we're willing to spend an average of £827.45 on being a wedding guest.

That rather mammoth sum breaks down in the following way:

• Travel - £174.70

• Accommodation - £182.79

• Gifts - £130.88

• Outfit - £136.01

• Beauty Treatments - £104.08

• Drinks - £98.99

The findings came from a survey of 2,000 UK adults carried out by One4all, the Post Office gift card.

The study also cast light on how far we're willing to go, literally, to watch our nearest and dearest say "I do".

On average, we're willing to travel 1,163 miles, and - aptly enough, given that figure - 31% of us welcome the idea of a wedding abroad.

Just 16% judged weddings held overseas to be a selfish move.

“It’s really heart-warming to see just how much British adults are willing to spend and how far they are willing to travel to be a part of their loved ones’ big day," says Aoife Davey, group marketing manager at One4all Gift Cards.

“I think it’s common for those planning their wedding to choose a location which will appease family and friends, but in fact, our data shows that Britons would happily travel long distances to see the couple tie the knot.

“It also appears that wedding guests in the UK are more than happy to splash out – this will be welcome news for couples planning their big day who are concerned about keeping costs down for guests.”
