Ah another day, another TikTok proving women should stop dating men entirely. In a viral video posted last week, one man is currently arguing that women who accept drinks off other men while in a relationship are, in fact, ‘cheating’ on their partner. Yes, seriously.
With over 3.2million views, the TikToker posted the claim as part of the 'red flags' trend, implying that accepting drinks of men while dating someone else is toxic behaviour. The video has over 180,000 likes and nearly 20,000 comments, but many have been quick to let him know that a man buying a woman a drink doesn’t entitle him to anything – which is what his opinion implies.
‘Receiving a beverage is not cheating,’ one woman responded to near 12,000 likes. ‘I think what you meant to call out here is the men thinking that a woman accepting a drink equals consent.’
‘A girl can just let a man buy her a drink and then leave,’ another added. ‘Buying me a drink is NOT an invitation or consent.’
‘So what I’m hearing is you think if you buy a girl a drink, single or not, then she “owes” you something,’ a third replied. ‘Eeeek, next you will tell me “not all men”.’
A number of men have attempted to educate him too, explaining that opinions such as his underlie male violence. Why? Because the idea that a woman is open to dating someone, or casually having sex with them, based on accepting one drink, allows men to assume consent they do not have.
‘A free drink is a free drink,’ one TikTok user agreed. ‘You only think it’s cheating because men believe if they buy a woman something they own her.’ Receiving 26,000 likes, it’s refreshing to see that at least some agree despite the original poster's nearly 200,000 likes.
It’s the videos meme-ing the TikToker though that are the real highlight, with some men choosing to stitch the video with their own reactions to their girlfriend being bought drinks. In a joyful twist of non-controlling behaviour, it seems far more agree that they’re happy to play the male friend for their girlfriend if it means getting meaningless free drinks from a stranger.
In a dating pool of controlling, entitled men, find yourself the guy willing to play your best friend for a free Bellini…
