September may no longer mean heading back to school, but old habits die hard. However many years on, there's still something about the start of autumn that makes us feel like we should be busying ourselves with doing more, seeing more and generally being better people. Perhaps it's a subconscious attempt to do banish any lurking feeling of guilt, having spent the summer doing little more than sitting around ordering Aperol spritzes and dissecting other people's wedding photos, perhaps it's just all the new stationery in the shops: while January always seems too cold, dark and unforgiving to stick to any resolutions, September somehow feels like a more natural time for self-improvement (or, at least, a second chance for all those good intentions that fell by the wayside some time in the first half of the year...)

You might be ready to embark on that stack of books you picked up in various airports but never actually brought down to the poolside; you might be attempting to re-engage with an old hobby - or you might just feel the need to put your brain back in gear after devoting summer evening after summer evening to Love Island. If it's the latter that's the case, let these podcasts ease you back into autumn: promising everything from business advice courtesy of the people who've been there to digested self-help books and current affairs to inspiring stories of self-made women, it's enough to make you feel productive and informed by power of osmosis (or so we like to tell ourselves...)

How To Fail With Elizabeth Day

Writer Elizabeth Day is convinced that, counter-intuitive as it might initially seem, embracing our failures can actually lead to our biggest successes – and after listening to her podcast, you'll be inclined to agree. The first season of How To Fail saw the writer grill the likes of Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller Bridge, journalist Dolly Alderton and activist Gina Miller about the things that didn't go right for them. It's by turns funny and insightful, with a second round hopefully coming soon.

How I Built This

As you'd expect, it's inspiring stuff - plus it'll surely see you well equipped for your next pub quiz.
