This New App Turns Your Phone Into A Disposable Camera And We’re Living For The Nostalgia

Because wasn't life so much simpler when we didn't care to take 1000 pictures at a time?

In less than one week of its release, Dispo has become the fourth most-downloaded app on the AppStore. The photo app, which turns your phone camera into a ‘digital disposable camera’ is now on track to become one of Instagram’s biggest rivals, already attracting £14million in investments since its launch on Sunday - according to Axios.

What is the Dispo app?

Not only does the app mimic the experience of using a disposable camera, you have a username and profile that allows you to create a shared camera roll of photos between you and your friends.

‘Open the app, take your photos, and wait for them to develop at 9AM the next day,’ the app description. ‘You will get a notification that your photos are developed and ready to be viewed, similar to actual disposable cameras. We’re bringing high quality film right to your phone.’

Launched by vlogger David Dobrik, the app is a follow on from his successful second Instagram account ‘David's Disposable’ which features candid images of celebrities like Jack Black, Madison Beer and Hailee Steinfeld out and about in Los Angeles. With over 14.3million followers on his main Instagram, David is essentially the King of Gen-Z - his YouTube channel vlogs attracting almost 20 million subscribers.

Turning that popularity into big business, he’s making disposable cameras what vinyl records were for millennials – not only using nostalgia to pique the interest of Gen-Zers who likely grew up holding iPhones, but making disposable cameras seem cool again.

And honestly, we’re onboard. We might relish in the glory of being able to take 1000 pictures on a night out, but wasn’t life all so much less stressful when one person had a disposable camera, you posed and laughed at the memories the following week only for no one to ever see them again? This, of course, isn’t like that – disposable pictures will likely become a staple of our Instagram Feeds very soon – but we can certainly long for the days it didn’t matter if someone’s hair was out of place or their foot looked too long or their knee looked too knobbly.

With Dispo, none of that will exist – pictures will be taken, night outs will be continued and if you looked ashow? Well, you won’t know till 9am the next day when the hangover takes over the pain caused by not having something Instagrammable to share. Honestly, this might be the revolution we all need heading back into our social lives in summer – as we enter the new roaring 20s, we’re going to make the assumption most of the states we end up in won’t be Instagrammable anyway. We’re certainly hoping so at least, we’ve got a year of making up to do…

How to download Dispo

Right now, Dispo is only available on the App Store, meaning it's for iPhones only. You also need to be invited to the app before you can use it. When we tried to sign up, you can download, create an account through Apple or Snapchat logins but once you've made your username if you don't have an invite the app states the following:

'You're on the waitlist, so our servers don't melt! Can't stand the wait? Find a frriend who's already on Dispo and ask for an invite to get immediate access. Or, DM us on TikTok @dispo We'll be handing out invites all week.'

Since it's early days, and thus in the beta testing stage, getting a Dispo app invite is proving difficult for many. Users who already have access to the app have 20 invites each, according to Pop Buzz - so you're best DMing people who already have access to the app to find your own invite (much like the Clubhouse app).

Some people are offering Dispo app invites on other social media sites like Twitter, YouTube and Reddit - some are even charging for them, so steer clear of those as they could be scammers. Ultimately, it's a waiting game until Dispo's servers can keep up with unlimited downloads - so just keep an eye on social media in the meantime.

Drink or Doom

Sounds ominous, I know. But never fear, it's not that scary. It's set up like a comic book and basically involves completing various challenges. They can be a bit risqué, to say the least so you'll want to play this one with people you trust not to broadcast the whole thing on Instagram stories. Android / iOS

Drink & Tell

Three guesses what the premise of this game is? Nope, you won't get it. You chose from six categories – love, sex, life & death, personality, ethics and user generated', and then you'll be presented with a question with multiple answers that you have to read out to the group before you make your choice. Then everyone else has to guess how you answered and whoever gets it wrong has to drink. It's quite the test of friendship, really.Android / iOS

Bomba Drink

Did you ever play pass the bomb at school? That high pressure, think on your feet and pretend and inanimate object is about to explode game? This is like that. You can play Classic mode which is the PG, punishment-free version, or Happy/Party modes which involve taking a drink if you lose.Android / iOS

Picolo

This is right up there as one of the best, hassle free drinking game apps. All you have to do is input the names of the people playing and you're off. As the phone is passed from player to player you'll each be given an instruction. It can be anything from 'Player 1 has to drink every time Player 2 drinks' and 'Player 3 must speak in an Irish accent' to 'The first person to text a family member can give out 2 sips' and 'Name songs by Beyoncé, first person to repeat themselves or can't think of anything drinks 2 times'. Kings

I'm of the personal belief that this game is a bad idea for everyone involved. Mainly because I played it once back in 2011 and to this day have no idea what happened afterwards. But if you keep the drinking to sensible proportions (like always, obvs) then maybe you'll come out of it better than I did. Here's your card-free version of Ring of Fire. Android

Game of Shots

If it's variation you want, Game of Shots carries a whole load of different drinking games in the one app. There's everything from (digital) card and dice games to classics like 'Truth or Dare' that you don't have to bother coming up with ideas for. There's also a little indicator of how boozy each game is out of six depending on what you want the vibe of the night to be. Android

Seven Drinking Party

Another card game of sorts for ya. Choose between 'Original', 'Hardcore' and 'Ultimate' (guides to the required levels of consumption) game modes and be taken on a journey. There's 420 illustrated cards that'll give you various instructions. They range from standard 'player with the fullest glass drink' to 'tell us about one of your favourite books'. Android / iOS
