Ahh Halloween, the holiday we all love until it actually comes around. I swear, year after year, Halloween has the biggest hype of any one night out – and every year, we’re slightly… let down. It may be that we get too excited for our own costumes only to be outshone by our favourite celebrities, or the fact that Halloween events seem to sell-out quicker than New Year’s Eve these days, but spooky season never seems to live up to the astronomical excitement we put on it.

Of course, that’s not always been true. There was one particular year the Halloween hit it’s prime, and frankly, it’s gone downhill ever since. The fateful year would be 1997, when horror films ruled the silver screen, we had endless inspiration for iconic costumes and everyone celebrated Halloween in style.

So, allow us to take you back in time, to the glory days of Halloween, and relive the highlights of our favourite spooky season…

I Know What You Did Last Summer came out...

Based on the 1993 novel of the same name, I Know What You Did Last Summer had a stellar cast of Young Hollywood icons including Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and Freddie Prinze Jr. Far from the slightly off-piste Halloween franchises we see today, the horror was a raging success, remaining number one at the U.S. box office for three consecutive weeks! Sarah and Jennifer even received awards for their role in the film, which has become a classic Halloween watch ever since.

Spice Girls costumes stole the show

The year Spice Up Your Life was released, in October no less, Spice Girls breakthrough success came in 1997. Meaning, of course, they were the group costume of choice for every single friendship group around the world. Still to this day, dressing like a Spice Girl remains an iconic Halloween costume - despite the fact the only scary thing about them is how few awards they received during their tenure as the worlds best girl group.

Goosebumps

With so much horror on screen, it's no wonder Goosebumps was also one of our favourite franchises of the moment in 1997. Three franchises of R.L Stine Goosebumps books were released over the course of the year, with one of the original series released every month of 1997 too.
