Of all the things we thought about when we hear the news that there will be a new Sex And The City reboot coming out is that the show would be forced to fight it out with Sopranos fans.
It all started when journalist Hadley Freeman tweeted about the new Sex and the City remake - and the treatment it had been subjected to compared to a show, such as The Sopranos.
'I find it fascinating that Sex and the City - a show about a bunch of white women making jokes and shagging - is considered embarrassingly retro and borderline offensive, but The Sopranos - a show about a bunch of white men killing each other -is considered an untouchable classic,' she wrote and quickly went viral.
Of course there was also then a pile-on of men HUGELY offended and fuming, leading to Hadley later tweeting: 'New title for memoir: Men Explain Sex and the City to Me'.
So, for days now, Sex and the City and Sopranos have been debated and discussed in the same breath.
And, not to go all Carrie, but seeing as they both took place in the same New York and aired at the same time on HBO, we couldn't help but wonder... what would a Sex and the City and Sopranos mash-up episode look like?
We had thoughts of Carrie bumping into Christopher in the city, and being fuming when he took her back to Artie Bucco's restaurant in, HORROR, Jersey. She'd likely meet Tony, be won over by him... and then be sternly told off by Miranda the next day. Though, we also kinda want Charlotte and Adriana to meet. As one friend said: 'Same insane optimism and Prince Charming rescue complex.'
BUT as we dug for more info for our fanfic, we found that this had already been done, but a much superior talent.
In January 2019, writer Eliza Cossio tweeted that she'd scripted a crossover episode, which went wild on social media.
You can stillread the script online here, so spoilers ahead if you want a treat this evening - it's very good and very funny btw.
It's called 'Business or Personal? An Original Sopranos and Sex And The City Crossover Episode' and speaking at the time to AV Club, Eliza said: 'I wrote this script because Sopranos and SATC aired at the same time and took place a few miles apart, and the idea of them both existing in the same universe really made me laugh. These are two of my favourite shows, and the rom-com and the mob movie are two of my favorite genres (the episode is called “Business or Personal?”—a nod to a line from both The Godfather and You’ve Got Mail) so I didn’t want to just make fun of them. Instead I tried to find the comedy in following their forms. That being said, I would probably have a hard time explaining this to David Chase [The Sopranos creator].'
So, what happens?
Well, sorry, but Big gets killed by the mob, then Carrie and Paulie Walnuts meet after the murder. The four women go to New Jersey for free Manolo Blahniks - and it's Miranda and Carmela who become friends.
Asked why she decided not to pair Carrie and Tony, Eliza told Slate: ' I think it felt too obvious to have it be Tony. I also just didn’t want to do that to Carmela in this fake universe. I really didn’t want there to be problems, more problems, for Carmela. I wouldn’t wanna put Carrie against Carm—that would not be good. I just feel like Paulie’s a fucking crazy character. I thought he would be fun as a contrast to what Carrie normally goes for, but then also, I could kind of see her falling for somebody like him. She didn’t have the best taste in men sometimes'.
Now that, surely, is something that we can all agree on...
