You know those first few days of the new year where you expect to feel fresh and revitalised, ready to take on whatever January health kick you committed to a few days prior, but actually you just feel tired, heavy and ready to sleep for the entirety of 2019: in other words, you feel like a potato. Well, it’s not just you, we all relate heavily to the potato this time of year, which is the reason we think a potato is currently going viral.
In a video by one Twitter user @klaidbitter, titled ‘I’m getting ready to go out at 6am’ (loosely translated from Ukrainian), a potato gets a full makeover. Yes, really. Foundation, brows, eyeshadow, liner, lipstick, even a great nose contour, the lot. The original 15 second video has been liked almost 29,000 times, and retweeted over 8,000 times, whereas other shares have received near 500,000 likes and over 114,000 retweets.
In fact, the potato makeover video made on Tik Tok – a social media app where users share 15-second videos - has inspired others to share their own makeup skills on root vegetables. Of course, it's also made half of us feel absolutely inadequate at our own makeup skills, given that a potato can be fully contoured while the rest of us still haven’t mastered a smokey eye.
To be honest, we've seen impressive makeovers done on even smaller surfaces than a potato - you haven't witnessed art until you've seen someone draw genuinely lifelike eyebrow hairs onto their wrist - and with this potato craze now going viral we can only ask, why are we all so obsessed with this? Who even thinks to start doing make-up on a potato?
Of course, we know why, it can only be explained by the festive season. We all had far too much time away from normalcy, and those days between Christmas and New Year clearly took some people to new heights of weird. What's to blame for our current obsession then? Well, the first week back at work generally doesn't count towards 'New Year, New Me' does it?
We can continue to ignore the fact we have a ton of work to catch up on, fight the thirst for alcohol or hunger meat as we settle into dry January or veganuary, and just sit back and watch potato makeover videos instead. It's January 2nd, anything goes...
