Workers in Israel are placing pictures of Greta Thunberg next to plastic utensils around their offices in a bid to deter plastic use in the workplace. Images of her picture next to plastic disposables are now spreading on social media, with many commending the people responsible.

Journalist Allison K. Sommer brought the trend to Twitter, telling her followers that it is ‘a trend in Tel Aviv workplace cafeterias [to put] photos of a judgemental Greta Thunberg next to disposable utensils.’ Sharing a series of images, the posters show Thunberg scowling, shouting her infamous ‘how dare you!’ and asking ‘are you sure?’.

The images highlight the extent of disposable plastic used in workplaces, with piles of plastic cups, cutlery and jars all around the work stations that now house Thunberg’s appropriately judgemental stare.

‘I'm going get one for my fridge!!!’ one user replied.

According to a study by Israeli environmental organisation Adam Teva V’Din, the average Israeli creates more than double the average plastic waste per person internationally. More than that, of all Mediterranean cities, Tel Aviv is the third biggest contributor to plastic waste being dumped in the ocean.

As a country, Israel has one of the lowest recycling rates of developed nations, with the Environmental Protection Ministry committing near £900,000 (NIS 4 billion) to improving recycling over the next decade. According to the Times of Israel, ‘it faces an uphill battle trying to educate the public to separate recyclables into the correct containers.’

But using less plastic disposables is something we should all be thinking about. Perhaps it’s a trend we should all be jumping on then? After all, if Thunberg’s pained face can’t make you second-guess picking up a plastic cup on a coffee run, what can?
