Her ex-husband, Jeff Bezos, is yet to join the same pledge made by the world’s wealthiest people.

MacKenzie Scott has donated $1.7billion (£1.3billion) of her $37billion fortune to charitable causes. As one of the world’s richest women following her divorce from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, she did it as part of a pledge to give away the majority of her wealth.

Donating to 116 organisations, ranging from LGBT+ charities to racial equity organisations, Scott said she chose the causes based not just on their work but their leadership to ensure a ‘vital variety of perspective and experience in solutions on every cause.’

‘On this list, 91% of the racial equity organizations are run by leaders of colour,’ she said in a statement. ‘100% of the LGBTQ+ equity organizations are run by LGBTQ+ leaders, and 83% of the gender equity organizations are run by women, bringing lived experience to solutions for imbalanced social systems.’

Scott joined The Giving Pledge last year, an organisation that commits the world’s wealthiest people to give away the majority of their wealth to philanthropic causes. Scott’s ex-husband, who she divorced in April, has come under fire for not making the same commitment despite being the richest individual in the world. However, he commended her for doing so when she joined in May last year, tweeting ‘MacKenzie is going to be amazing and thoughtful and effective at philanthropy, and I’m proud of her. Her letter is so beautiful. Go get ‘em MacKenzie.’

An author and philanthropist, Scott received 25% shares in Amazon under the terms of the divorce – a company she played a role working for Bezos as an accountant in the company’s early days. Her donations today amount to less than 5% of her overall wealth. Her ex Bezos came under fire earlier this year when a $10billion pledge to tackle climate change amounted to less than 8% of his overall wealth of $171billion (according to Business Insider).

Ultimately though, Scott has received a wave of support from people given this initial donation is part of a larger pledge to give away at least 50% of her inordinate wealth. With near 10,000 likes on her tweet announcing the donations – hundreds have replied with messages of gratitude.
