Last week, Machine Gun Kelly asked Megan Fox to marry him. The pair - who have been partial to a publicity stunt or two, such as chaining themselves to each other by their nails, and tattooing each other during an interview - went about the proposal in a completely normal way, as Megan told everyone that they drank each other's blood afterwards.

You might think the couple, saying something that outrageous, might just be having a laugh at everyone else's expense. But now, it seems unlikely they were joking, as Machine Gun Kelly{ =nofollow}has revealed a further disturbing detail from the engagement: the ring he designed Megan has 'thorns' in it, so it would 'pain' her if she takes it off.

'The concept is that the ring can come apart to make two rings,’ he explained toVogue.‘When it’s together, it’s held in place by a magnet. So you see how it snaps together? And then it forms an obscure heart. And you see this right here? The bands are actually thorns. So if she tries to take it off, it hurts…’ Horribly, he then adds: ‘Love is pain!’

Now, as Susannah Reid said this morning on Good Morning Britain, this is a huge red flag. wrapped up in an expensive ring. The implication is that, if Megan wanted to end the engagement, and leave MGK, it would cause her physical and emotional pain. It's controlling, abusive and concerning.

The archaic narrative that love is supposed to be painful is toxic. It's not. Love is the entire opposite - it's supportive and comforting. Gestures such as this ring romanticise abuse, and relationships which are unhealthy. When you have people like MGK suggesting that pain is the only way love works, the lines between romance and an abusive, controlling relationship can easily be blurred. It spreads the idea that you only deserve love if someone hurts you, which obviously isn't true. Nobody deserves abuse from the people they love.

And that's why the ring is far more troubling than the infinite headlines about them drinking each other's blood.
