I bet you think this song is about Paige, don’t you, don’t you? Well it’s not. Lewis Capaldi has finally revealed who his hit song Someone You Loved is about – and it’s not who any of us thought. Ever since Love Island’s Paige Turley announced the Scottish pop star is her ex, speculation has been rife about whether the ballad that propelled him to super-stardom is about her. But, in an interview in The Times today, he admits it was actually written about his late grandmother.
In the interview he spoke about Paige, who he dated for over a year after meeting at college in Motherwell, Scotland.
‘Me and Paige are on good terms and she’s not my girlfriend any more, so when I found out she was on Love Island I was, like, “Who cares?”’ he said. ‘By all accounts she might win it and best of luck to her, but Someone You Loved is not about Paige. It’s about my grandmother. When you’re little, your grandmother is a nice old lady who makes you a nice bowl of soup. As you get older you learn about who she actually is and sadly she passed away just as I started to find out about her life. A lot of songs on the album may be about Paige, but Someone You Loved isn’t one of them.’
The song, which he released in 2018, went on to be his first number one single and he hasn't looked back since. Next week he will be at Brit Awards, where he has been nominated for four awards, including Best British Male and Best Album.
‘The Brits is going to be particularly surreal because I’m bringing Mum and Dad and my two best pals from home, so I’m taking my world with me,’ he said in the interview. ‘It’s going to be, like, there’s Stormzy, and there’s that idiot Connor who I used to get drunk in the park with.’
Well, now we know!
