The polls may have predicted a Conservative majority this week but the landslide win has proven quite a shock as Labour has lost a number of former strongholds. But they’re not the only ones. Here are the biggest shocks you need to know about...
Biggest Shocks Of The General Election - Grazia
Jeremy Corbyn will not lead the next election
Corbyn announced he will not lead Labour in the next general election. While that is not necessarily surprising when a party leader loses so heavily, it is a shock for a leader like Corbyn. He has repeatedly refused to step down as leader despite concerns about his popularity with voters in the past few years.
Jo Swinson loses her seat
It's not every election that a party leader loses their own constituency. Swinson lost her Dunbartonshire East seat by 149 votes to the SNP's Amy Callaghan. 'Some will be celebrating the wave of nationalism that is sweeping on both sides of the borders,' she said at the count. 'But let me say now, for millions of people in our country these results will bring dread and dismay.'Swinson has been an MP since 2005, losing her seat once before in 2015 but gaining it back in 2017 before becoming leader of the Lib Dems in July this year.
Nicola Sturgeon’s huge victory
The SNP made huge gains in this election, winning 47 of the Scotland's 59 seats – a gain of 12 seats. Sturgeon has said it is a 'clear message' on the need for a second independence referendum for Scotland. She has pledged to send a letter to Johnson before Christmas recommending Holyrood be given the power to hold another referendum, although given the huge Conservative majority the likelihood of that happening is still up in the air.
Luciana Berger loses her seat
The former Labour MP quit in February to begin her campaign as a Lib Dem candidate following Labour's antisemitism row. She has become a huge voice in the conversation, however she lost Finchley and Golders Green seat to Conservative MP Mike Freer. She called the loss a 'mighty shame' and blamed Labour being 'mired in racism' for their huge loss.
Labour lose strongholds
The Tories gained 24 former strongholds from Labour, mainly in the North – many of which have not been Conservative constituencies for decades. The new Tory majorities include Dudley North, Bassetlaw and Great Grimsby alongside others.
Dennis Skinner loses his seat after 49 years
Labour MP Dennis Skinner, who has kept his seat for 49 years, lost out to a Tory surge in Bolsover, Derbyshire with a devastating blow. Skinner was a former miner and at 87 years old has been an MP for most of his life.
Zac Goldsmith loses his seat to the Lib Dems
Former candidate for mayor of London, Goldsmith lost out to the Lib Dems by over 7,000 votes. His pro-Brexit views proved difficult in his Richmond Park seat, losing to Sarah Olney.
