Wouldn't it be nice if we lived in a world where the President of the United States hadn't been accused of sexual misconductmore times than you've probably bought milk? The latest woman to speak out against the man who famously encourages men to 'grab them by the pussy' (leaving us in no doubt to his hazy understanding of the boundaries of consent) is the writer E. Jean Carroll.
In a cover story in The New York magazine, Carroll alleged that Trump sexually assaulted her in the mid 1990's in a dressing room of Bergdorf Goodman. Describing the assault, she explains that after rejecting Trump's suggestion that she tried on a 'lacy see-through bodysuit of lilac gray' that he claimed to be buying for a female friend, the now-President of America 'seizes both my arms and pushes me up against the wall a second time, and, as I become aware of how large he is, he holds me against the wall with his shoulder and jams his hand under my coat dress and pulls down my tights,'. The harrowing account goes on to allege Trump penetrates Carroll with his fingers and then penis which he thrust 'halfway – or completely, I’m not certain – inside me.'
She is now the 16th women to have accused Donald Trump of historical sexual assault, harassment or rape. With characteristic disregard for the severity of these allegations, Trump responded by stating 'Number one: she's not my type' and that 'Number Two: it never happened. It never happened, OK'.
The response is egregious for all sorts of reasons - not least because it supports the gross misapprehension that rape has anything to do with desire. Rape is about power, not sex and certainly not love, and comments like this from Trump suppose some sort of equivalence between choosing to have sex with someone and choosing to rape them.
And anyway, what does he expect us to understand from this? That Donald Trump would only rape women who_are_ his type? In the climate we live in: where women's reproductive and human rights are facing daily rollbacks, his flippancy and arrogance in the face of serious allegations of sexual assault is both disturbing and sinister. Not least of all, because this is the man who is currently makes decisions for one of the largest countries in the world. Here's a comprehensive list of all of the allegations of sexual misconduct that have now been made against President Trump to date...

Never happened! Who would do this in a public space with live security cameras running. Another False Accusation. Why doesn't @washingtonpost report the story of the women taking money to make up stories about me? One had her home mortgage paid off. Only @FoxNews so reported...doesn't fit the Mainstream Media narrative.'
