Why Is Dominic Cummings Involved In The #FreeBritney Movement?

The question on everyones minds after his tweet last night...

Dominic Cummings

Last night, Dominic Cummings jumped on the #FreeBritney bandwagon. Yes, you did read that correctly. The former advisor to Boris Johnson tweeted his support of Britney Spears, encouraging her to write to everyone in Congress and ask if they personally support the conservatorship laws that have kept her under her families control since 2008.

‘Now @britneyspears can hire own lawyers: please Britney team write/tweet to all in Congress, all @POTUS staff, all @GavinNewsom staff, judges’ staff challenging whether they personally support the shocking conservatorship laws,’ he tweeted. ‘They won't & the tide will #FreeBritney RETWEET!’

Naturally, his followers were confused. In fact, many began hypothesising what exactly led to this random tweet at 9.41 on a Monday evening – some suggestions less savoury than others. First though, came the assumption that he didn’t actually tweet it himself.

‘Wait, have you been hacked?’ author Emma Kennedy replied to the tweet, to hundreds of likes. Thousands others followed suit, wondering if the former chief advisor had fallen foul to some kind of Britney-obsessed hacker.

Other suggestions were of the less, should we say, PG variety – many questioning whether or not had been on a bender before tweeting out about something so far from his usual area of expertise (by expertise, we of course mean bullshitting until everyone believes you’re an expert… as he’s basically admitted himself).

But some aren’t taking it as a sweeping moment of haphazard tweeting – nor a hacking, no. Others believe this is some kind of effort to sweeten his dwindling reputation. Probably going to take more than a #FreeBritney tweet to forget the whole, you know, conning the public into voting for a Prime Minister you didn’t believe could run the country thing. But hey, worth a shot.

Ultimately, it’s become the most memed moment of the day – and that’s probably exactly what Dominic wants. Whether he tweeted it intentionally or not, drunk or not, it’s no doubt still up because he expects to gain from it in some way. He might not be a political mastermind, but he definitely knows how to master the minds of the public to focus on whatever he needs them to.
