Last night, during the BBC’s Conservative leadership debate, one woman asked the five potential leaders of our country very simple question: ‘why are you contemplating a no deal Brexit?’
Carmella, from Southampton, pose the question to all candidates, saying, ‘As a mother of three with a husband in the property industry, if we have a no deal my husband could lose his job and my children face an uncertain future - why are you even contemplating a no deal Brexit?’
All five of the men failed to really answer her question, apart from saying that it was a ‘last resort’ and agreeing they need to prepare for any outcome. ‘We need to make sure that we're ready for whatever comes,’ Michael Gove said, ‘Of course there are challenges with no deal but we're a great country we can get through it.’
‘I think it's very important for Carmella to understand that none of us want a no deal Brexit,’ added Boris Johnson, before Sajid Javid stated ‘we could prepare more’ and Jeremy hunt said, ‘the reason we need to keep no deal on the table is to get a deal but it should only be a last resort.’
Of all the candidates, only Rory Stewart ruled out a no-deal Brexit. ‘In the end, we're in a room with a door and the door is called Parliament, and I am the only person here trying to find the key to the door,’ he concluded, ’everybody else is staring at the wall shouting “believe in Britain”.’
At this point, Carmella had seemingly had enough of all of the answer-evading and as all of the men continued to talk over each other, she was spotted doing the biggest eye-roll of all time. Whether it was their answers (or lack thereof) or the fact that none of these men can debate in a way that actually commands any respect from the public, either way she spoke for pretty much everyone when she so brazenly expressed her exhaustion at the entire debate.
‘Carmella for PM’, Labour MP Jess Phillips tweeted, with Alastair Campbell – former spokesman for Tony Blair’s – agreed, ‘Carmella in Southampton - your headshake is winning the debate hands down.’
As her question time concluded, Emily Maitlis asked her the all-important question, ‘Carmella, are you reassured by what you've heard this evening?’ to which she once again spoke for all of us saying ‘no, I'm not.’
With an entire Twitter thread devoted to her response to the debate, it’s clear that we’re all in agreement: this entire contest in one massive eye-roll that we can’t wait to be over
