Last night, Chris Pratt posted a strange tribute to his wife Katherine Schwarzenegger. We say strange for a multitude of reasons. It was littered with eye-roll worthy tropes about marriage, how much she does for him in exchange for him - checks notes - occasionally opening a jar of pickles, jokes about not getting her a birthday present and claims that her heart ‘belongs to me’.
But the strangest part? His gratitude for her giving him a ‘healthy daughter’, Lyla Maria Pratt. At least, that’s strange, according to the public – some of whom have read his words as implicitly critical of his ex-wife, Anna Faris. Anna, who married Chris in 2009, had one son with the actor before they split in 2017 and were divorced a year later – the same year Chris began dating Katherine.
Notably, Anna and Chris’s son was born nine weeks premature, weighing only 3 pounds, and suffered from a cerebral haemorrhage as a result. According to Anna’s memoir, Unqualified, she and Chris were told that ‘Jack had some severe brain bleeding and there was a chance that he could be developmentally disabled.’
The couple had to wait 18 months for a full prognosis on their son's development, but were grateful to find out that he had not suffered major permanent damage. However, Anna stated that Jack does suffer from some muscle issues in his legs and vision problems.
It’s with that in mind many have looked upon Chris’s post with raised eyebrows, while others cannot fathom that a father would possibly criticise his own child’s health issues online.
Because far be it for me to defend a man known to be associated with homophobic church Hillsong (which he has denied is homophobic, but the jury is out on that one) and who makes weird jokes about being a crap husband in exchange for a perfect wife, but it does seem unlikely that this is anything more than a case of ill-thought-out wording.
After all, why shouldn’t Chris be grateful that his second child is healthy? Having dealt with 18 months of crippling worry for his first child’s wellbeing, it’s no wonder he’s thankful that he didn’t have to suffer the same ordeal with his daughter. That doesn’t necessarily mean he would blame Anna for Jack’s health issues, nor that he thinks better of Katherine for Lyla being healthy.
Of course, it is uncomfortable to read, particularly if you’re imagining how Anna may’ve read it herself. That’s why Anna’s name trended on Twitter last night as people flocked to show her support.
Ultimately, it’s up for Chris to clear up himself. And while he’s at it, if he could also acknowledge all of the queer members of his church that felt shunned by Hillsong and that this brand of ‘I do nothing for my perfect wife and she loves me anyway!!’ humour is boring, that would be great.
