Have you ever seen a picture of a black hole? Nope, nor had we until yesterday when Dr Katie Bouman made it possible for us with an Event Horizon Telescope and the algorithim she created.

For three years Bouman has been working on an algorithm designed to capture the first ever image of a black hole, which was accomplished yesterday. The news went viral with everyone sharing the image on social media – but what about the woman who made this all possible?

Bouman led the project at from MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and the MIT Haystack Observatory, according to the BBC.

And when you’re done marveling at the image of the black hole; it was taken by a network of eight telescopes, involved a team of 200 scientists and tool a photo of a black hole which you can’t see with the naked eye, but is three million times the size of the Earth, take a look at the incredible moment when Bouman saw the image she’d made it possible to take for the first time.

‘Watching in disbelief as the first image I ever made of a black hole was in the process of being reconstructed,’ she captioned the image, which now has over 31 thousand shares on Facebook.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was one of many public figures to congratulate Bouman, tweeting; ‘Take your rightful seat in history, Dr. Bouman! Congratulations and thank you for your enormous contribution to the advancements of science and mankind. Here’s to #WomenInSTEM!’
