Beyonce and Jay-Z Took Champagne To The Golden Globes Prompting Lots Of Etiquette Questions

Beyonce and Jay-Z further elevated their icon status on Sunday by bringing their own champagne to the Golden Globes. Even more amusing when you realise that the event was sponsored by Moet & Chandon, who make their own very nice champagne.

So, Bey and Jay sat at their table drinking their very own Ace of Spades fizz. The brand is owned by Jay-Z, who bought it in 2014. It retails for £245 a bottle and is described as being 'quite impressive' by Decanter magazine.

So there's no question that the champs they brought along was nice. And according to people there on the night, they shared it with Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston, so they weren't stingy with it, either. But it does raise some questions about the rules surrounding bringing alcohol to a party.

We all know that it's polite to bring a bottle to an event where alcohol will be served. Possibly two bottles if you're a couple and you're planning to make a real night of it. But do you have any control over what you drink upon arrival?

Most of us will know the sinking feeling that comes when you take a nice bottle of wine from an actual wine shop to a dinner party, then watch it go into the wine rack or cupboard, only to be served a lukewarm glass of supermarket basics Sauvignon Blanc which will give you a blinding headache within minutes.

If you're a fussy drinker with a strong preference for Malbec or Chardonnay are you allowed to request to drink your own wine? Or do you have to sit with gritted teeth knowing that it will be enjoyed by your hosts on some other evening when you're not present?

Manners experts at Debrett's have some advice about what to do if you want your hosts to save the bottle you've lovingly chosen for them, writing: 'It’s perfectly acceptable for your host to open and serve it the same night. In fact, 52% of us expect this to be the case, so try not to betray your dismay that the vintage champagne you brought is being lavished on undiscerning palates when you were expecting it to be saved for a special occasion. (Or bring it unchilled – it’s less likely to be opened the same night!)'

But if you're desperate to get a glass of the nice booze you brought? Try bringing it chilled as a hint that it's ready to be drunk straight away, if it's white or Rose. Otherwise, you might just have to be honest, challenge your inner Beyonce, and ask them to get the bottle out.
