There were a lot of moments that ‘stole the show’ at Joe Biden’s inauguration last night. From Amanda Gorman’s incredible recital of her poem The Hill We Climb – and her yellow Prada coat, of course – to J.Lo’s choice to speak in Spanish during her performance of ‘This Land is Our Land’. But one person managed to outshine them all: Bernie Sanders.

That’s right, the man many once dreamed would be US president managed to steal Joe Biden’s thunder right from under him yesterday after becoming the most memed man of the night. Showing up in his token brown parka coat and some fashionably oversized mittens, his entire demeanour throughout the inauguration was what memes are made of. In fact, people are even searching for them on Google, with ‘Bernie Sanders memes’ being a breakout search this morning.

The Vermont Senator’s mittens have made such a stir he was even interviewed about them by CBS News. ‘In Vermont, we dress warm. We know something about the cold,’ he said, chuckling. ‘And we’re not so concerned about good fashion. We want to keep warm. And that’s what I did today.’

The maker of said mittens even stepped up to claim them, tweeting that they’re also super sustainable (of course, this is Bernie Sanders after all). ‘I made Bernie’s mittens as a gift a couple years ago,’ tweeted Jen Ellis, a Vermont schoolteacher. ‘They are made from repurposed wool sweaters and lined with fleece (made from recycled plastic bottles).’
