The men offended by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion's new song, WAP, are frequent. Their leader? None other than US journalist and podcast host Ben Shapiro, who has taken centre stage in the WAP response for claiming that his ‘doctor wife’ would consider WAP a medical condition. Cue the memes.
It started when he recited the lyrics on his podcast, in what can only be described as a world-record attempt at the fastest way to dry up anyone’s WAP. Claiming that the sexually explicit lyrics are anti-feminist, he mocked ‘This is what the feminist movement was all about, and if you say anything differently it’s ’cause you’re a misogynist, see?’
Yes actually Ben, because if your first thought when listening to a song where women claim ownership of their sexuality and discuss sex in the exact same way men have done for decades is to mock them and, with all your experience of being a woman, claim that they don’t understand feminism… you are a misogynist. In fact, to be so offended by two women expressing their sexual desires speaks volumes about the way you view women.
Being ‘vulgar’, as he calls it, communicating our sexual needs with confidence, and enjoying sex doesn’t make a woman any less feminist – it makes us multi-faceted humans and, frankly, brave. Brave because having the confidence to speak as openly and explicitly about sex as men do in a world that punishes women for claiming ownership of their sexuality (case in point) while simultaneously treating them as sexual objects is no small feat.
But serious points aside, it’s the meme replies to Ben’s comments that are best. Most notably, when he made one very illuminating statement about his own sex life after claiming that his wife would consider WAP to be a medical problem.
‘As I also discussed on the show, my only real concern is that the women involved -- who apparently require a "bucket and a mop" -- get the medical care they require. My doctor wife's differential diagnosis: bacterial vaginosis, yeast infection, or trichomonas,’ he tweeted.
Like moths to a flame, the Twitter comedians descended. Oh boy was it good. Just take a look for yourself…

Honestly, jokes aside, the snowflake reaction from men offended by WAP was to be expected, but that doesn’t make it any less of a disappointment. Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion have both since responded to the backlash themselves with jokes about offending men, but it is sad that two of the biggest rappers can’t come together to create an absolute banger without this commentary of female sexuality and whether it’s right or wrong ensuing. Ben, please, step out of this conversation for now and maybe focus on your own expressions of self and sexuality. It sounds like your wife might need it.
