Amanda Knox is facing backlash on Twitter after joking about her acquitted murder conviction in 2007, comparing her four years spent in prison to the impeding US election outcome. With near 6,000 quote tweets, her tweet is quickly going viral online.
‘Whatever happens, the next four years can't be as bad as that four-year study abroad I did in Italy, right?,’ Knox tweeted this morning, after a night of high tension as the worldawaits the US general election results. Near 11,000 likes later, she has received thousands of replies condemning her for joking about such a sensitive topic.
‘I can think of another student studying abroad in Italy that had it a lot fucking worse,’ one Twitter user replied. ‘I'm sure the family of the murdered girl appreciate you finding the funny side....,’ another added.
Some however have supported her in the wake of the backlash, claiming she's allowed to joke about the experience because she too suffered trauma in spending so much time in prison for a crime she was exonerated for. That being said, the majority of the reaction intensely disagree that her tweet could be considered humorous in any way.
‘Agreed, the mass persecution of blacks, Muslims, Latinx, & LGBTQ pales in comparison to the tribulations of a single white woman,’ one social media user responded to her.
Her tweet comes just days after the anniversary of Meredith Kercher’s murder, her British flatmate during their study abroad in Perguia, Italy. Knox was accused of murdering Kercher, 21, with her then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito and spent almost four years in an Italian prison before being definitively acquitted by the Italian Supreme Court of Cassation in 2015. Known burglar Rudy Guede was found guilty of murder and as of this year is currently serving a 16-year-sentence.
The infamous case has cause intense debate ever since it first made the press, with people in the comment section of her tweet continuing to argue about the case to this day. Knox is now making headlines once again for her tweet, with many calling her reaction or attempt at humour 'bizarre' and 'shocking'. Despite the intense backlash to her tweet, Knox is yet to delete it.
