There are certain days when one might long for a relationship, on cold nights or when braving a friend’s wedding alone. Then, there are days when being single forever feels like the biggest blessing of all. That day is today, reading the latest ‘Am I The Asshole’ question going viral on Reddit{ =nofollow}. Honestly, reading this you will never be more grateful for the peace and quiet of being alone.

‘AITA for pointing out the historical inaccuracies of my girlfriend's erotic writing?,’ the original poster writes – to the tune of near 10,000 upvotes in the last 14 hours.

‘My (23M) girlfriend (20F) let me use her old computer while mine is broken and I found an old archive written by her when she was 16,’ he begins. ‘It is a long story about a maid in the antebellum south that has a romantic affair with the man of the house. It is not as overtly sexual as you may be thinking. It has sex, mostly towards the ending, but it is mainly romantic and very emotional.

‘The maid is clearly meant to be a version of my girlfriend,’ the poster continues. ‘Everything was fine for me until the part when they arrived to a train station. The maid wanted to leave because she couldn't bear for their romance to be hidden anymore. The man was following her to try to convince her to stay.’

Now let’s take a breath and guess what the poster's issue is, shall we? Is it the fact that his girlfriend relates to a maid falling in love the man who is – we can assume given the time reference – keeping her as a slave? That she’s romanticising an era of time when slavery was rife and presumably ignoring the obvious problematic power and race dynamics of this relationship? (I mean, he could just be really bad at relaying the depths of her teenage writing – and we’d put our money on that). Or is he just annoyed at the thought of a man ever chasing his maid down to a train station begging for her love?

None of the above guys, oh no. He’s mad about trains. Yes, seriously.

‘The issue is that I found the general representation of the station (and, later in the story, the trains themselves) to be full of anachronisms,’ the poster explains. ‘I am a train enthusiast and know a lot about the history of rail transportation in the United States. So, I talked to my girlfriend about it but she got upset. She has been saying I shouldn't have read the story because it was a personal thing from when she was a teenager. She is also mad my reaction was something as "superficial" as the level of train accuracy.’

How much are we willing to bet that OP is TikTok’s own trainspotting celebrity Francis Bourgeois? Well, you’d lose your money because he’s only 21. But hey at least we don’t have to call him an asshole. Because let’s be clear, this guy is definitely the asshole. We mean really… having an ‘issue’ the inaccuracy of a train station in your grown adult girlfriends TEENAGE writing? And raising it on a bank holiday of all times? OP, we beg you, take a day off.

But hey, didn’t we tell you you’d be glad to be single after reading that? Or at least if you are in a relationship, not the type where your partner would secretly read your erotic fiction and pick it apart for train inaccuracies – now that’s a bar we never thought we’d have to set…
