Last night, Adele hosted Saturday Night Live (SNL) and it’s safe to say her appearance was a hit with fans. Trending on Twitter this morning, everyone seems to be obsessed with not just the medley of best hits she performed, but how absolutely hilarious she is. As Adele stans, we’re not surprised, of course.
Immediately addressing the obsession with her weight loss, Adele’s opening monologue included a joke about her supposed ‘transformation’, saying, ‘I know I look really, really different since you last saw me but actually, because of all the Covid restrictions...I had to travel light and I could only bring half of me and this is the half I chose.’
But the real moment everyone’s talking about – and aren’t too happy about – was when she confirmed that her album actually is ‘not finished’, as some ‘insiders’ reported recently. Taking to Twitter to create memes about the immense sadness we now all feel having to wait that bit longer, fans used moments from the show to express their own upset.
Of course, they were more than made up for when Adele went on to perform some of her greatest hits on SNL. Admitting she was ‘too scared’ to host and perform standalone songs on SNL (H.E.R was actually the musical guest last night, which we're not mad about AT ALL) she instead sang as part of her skits. The fan favourite then was her skit about The Bachelor where she sang Rolling In The Deep, Hello, Someone Like You and When We Were Young as part of the five-minute sketch.
And while SNL has seen a downturn in ratings in recent years, Adele’s natural flair for comedy definitely made an impact online. In one skit, where she played a middle-aged divorcee perpetuating racist stereotypes while relaying the joy of visiting Africa (yes, the joke is referring to Africa as if it’s one country, not an entire continent) Adele seemed to find it as funny as fans did, breaking character a number of times as she attempted to stifle laughter.
She got serious though when she spoke about her history with SNL. Opening the show with a memory long forgotten, she reminded viewers that SNL actually broke her career in America 12 years ago.
‘You see I was the musical guest back in 2008 when Sarah Palin came on with Tina Fey,’ Adele explained. ‘So obviously a few million people tuned in to watch it. And well, the rest is now history.’
The highest rated episode of SNL in 14 years, Adele performing Cold Shoulder and Chasing Pavements on the show all those years ago made her an overnight success - with her debut album, 19, peaking at number one on the iTunes chart for the first time ever the next day. Chasing Pavements also became her first US hit after the show, climbing the Billboard chart from 46 to 11.
Of course, her mention of Sarah Palin – a former republican politician – was bound to draw raised eyebrows. But rest assured, Adele is nothing if not liberal and joked about how she doesn’t ‘know anything about American politics’, but she did offer a thank you to Palin for the eyeballs on her performances all those years ago. ‘I'll just say this: “Sarah Palin, babes, thanks for everything, yeah?”’, she laughed.
Other favourable moments on the show included her playing a ghost haunting a mansion and an English woman with a secret obsession with colouring books having her fortune told. ‘I wonder if you see anything work-related in the next year,’ she asked Madame Vivelda, played by comedian Kate McKinnon. ‘I see no concerts in 2020,’ McKinnon replied. ‘Only colouring.’
Well, that could tell us a lot about when to expect her new album then, huh? 2021 can’t come soon enough.

2008: The Low Bun
It's easy to forget the colour transformation that Adele's hair has undergone, never mind the styles. We love this glossy auburn shade seen here at 2008's Brit Awards. Remember when Adele was all about that low bun taken slightly to the side and a deep side part?
2008: The Big Fringe
There's something so beautifully 60s about Adele's thick, glossy fringe here, and the volume styled in to give her height at the crown of her head. Attending 2008's Nationwide Mercury Prize event Adele loooks every inch the 60s siren.
2011: The Blonde(ish) Bombshell
And just like that Adele's hair colour changed! Pictured here in 2011 at the MTV Video Awards Adele's lightened up honey toned hair colour perks up her complexion no end, and with all that volume those 60s vibes are still very much present.
2011: Ponytail Game
Pictured performing at the same MTV Video Awards in 2011 Adele's hair team got to work in record time to bestow her with a long and luscious ponytail. We were in awe.
2012: The Grammy Awards Glamour
Who could forget Adele's epic Grammys spree in 2012? Her hair look errs more on the 40s and 50s side of things here with those glamorous Hollywood waves.
2015: The Effortless Look
Pictured signing autographs ahead of an appearance on BBC Radio 2 in 2015 Adele's hair proves it's got just as much style off the red carpet as on it - what we would give for that effortless glamour.
2016: Tousled Waves
We can see a few changes in Adele's hair look here at the 58th Grammy Awards in 2016. First of there's the colour, her hair has been lightened up towards the ends and through the sections that frame her face, it's a style many copied at the time. The volume in her do has been taken down a notch and tousled waves as opposed to large, glossy, Hollywood ones are the order of the day.
2016: The Bob
We were head over heels for this Brit Awards appearance back in 2016, just look at that bob! Softly blowdried lengths paired with sunkissed highlights, a match made in heaven.
2017: The Up Do
Let's turn our attention to the 59th Grammy Awards in 2017 and that up do. Have you ever seen anything so immaculately swirled? This one's definitely a pro only job, but we could look at it forever.
2020: The Curls
This next shot comes via Adele's Instagram page (follow here @adele). This shot appeared in praise of Beyoncé's latest release, but all we could look at were those curls. It remains to be seen whether they came by way of a tong, a perm or a bit of scrunching but we're all for it - and look how long Adele's hair has gotten too!
