‘Have A Theme, Limit The Guestlist And Pair Your Drinks’: Laura Whitmore’s Top Tips For Virtual Hosting

Grazia’s Georgia Aspinall spoke to the presenter about her virtual birthday party and why Love Island will be better than ever next year.

‘I’m talking to my family more than ever before; my mum and I used to talk about once every two weeks and now we speak every single day,’ Laura Whitmore tells me over a Zoom call from the London home she shares with boyfriend, Iain Stirling. ‘It was my birthday on Monday and I don’t think I’ve ever had so many people contact me in my life.’

Like many of us, Laura has been hosting virtual get-togethers since lockdown began and says she’s actually socialising more these days. ‘I was always travelling all around the place but you forget, technology does mean you can actually talk every day,’ she says.

One of those travelling gigs was of course in her role presenting Love Island, which was postponed till next year this week because of the coronavirus pandemic. Laura admits that ‘I hadn’t even gotten to the stage of preparing for it because I was just trying to get over what’s happened this year’. But, she does think that all of this only means next year will be even bigger and better. ‘There was the most applicants ever for a series this year,’ she says. ‘So it just goes to show the thirst is still there.’

With her summer now freed up for other exciting opportunities, Laura has become quite the virtual socialising pro – with her birthday this week resulting in a number of separate celebrations.

‘I felt like it was a proper day and I’d been out and about,’ she says. ‘I had a FaceTime lunch with my mum, virtual drinks with my dad later on and then in the night we did a watch-along where everyone in their respective home watched Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and then talked about it over Zoom and had a drink. The next morning I actually felt like I’d had a night out.’

Now, she’s lending her hand to virtual hosting advice – partnering with Grey Goose to host a virtual dinner party masterclass this Thursday on their Facebook page – but she’s shared a few tips just for us…

Have a theme

‘If everyone is doing it in their household, you feel like you’re all in it together,’ Laura says. ‘On my birthday, my boyfriend made me a Darth Vader cake and then we created “out of this world” cocktails. We had costumes, my little godchild was dressed up as Princess Leia as was I and it was so nice to feel like you’re all doing the same thing.’

‘On Thursday, it’s Cosmopolitan Day so for my virtual dinner party I'm going to be making Grey Goose Cosmopolitans and everyone can do it along in their house,’ she adds.

Limit the guest list

‘Don’t go overboard on the guestlist, I’ve done this with online quizzes and stuff when you have so many people on a Zoom and you just can’t talk to everybody,’ she says. ‘It’s the same as real-life dinner parties, you can have a few and smaller is better. Don’t exclude people but maybe do the parties more and often rather than one big one where you can’t talk to anybody.’

Bring a dish

‘Why doesn’t everybody bring something different to the table?’ Laura asks. ‘I did an afternoon tea with my friend last week and she actually baked a cake and sent it to my house which was so lovely! But say you do a Mexican theme, everyone could create a different dish – so you’re learning new things too – and everyone’s eating a different thing but you can talk through what everyone’s bought to the table, be it fajitas or nachos or even some salsa.'

Dress your dining space

‘With virtual dinner parties, you don’t see the whole house so all you have to do is have one area of your house clean and looking nice,’ Laura says. ‘So I think use things you’ve already got in the house, light some candles or put out some flowers and while the weather’s so nice just use the natural light.’

‘For my birthday party, we all tried to dress our houses to the Star Wars theme as much as possible so some people stuck stars up and things like that,’ she adds. ‘It doesn’t have to be a lot just little small things to go with your theme.’

Pair your drinks

‘Have one cocktail for your starter and a different for your main course,’ says Laura. ‘So on Thursday I’m going to do Le Grand Fizz and then a Cosmopolitan for the main course with a twist, and then I’m really missing an Espresso Martini, so that’s my treat for dessert.’

Laura Whitmore has partnered with GREY GOOSE® to share her top tips for hosting the ultimate virtual dinner party. Tune in to the Grey Goose Facebook page on 7th May from 5pm – 5:30pm for Laura’s exclusive live masterclass.
