Face masks are a real skincare treat that allow us to fast-track our way to a healthier, more radiant complexion. Certain formulas will detox and target blemishes, whilst others bolster hydration and glow. But whatever your skincare wishes are, there’s no need to stop at one mask when you can apply a multitude of savvy solutions simultaneously to target each area appropriately. Enter: ‘multi-masking’. ‘Each part of our face has different requirements in terms of skincare,’ explains Celebrity Aesthetician and founder of her eponymous beauty brand, Mimi Luzon. ‘Multi-masking, where you apply different masks to different areas, is a great way to treat all skincare needs at the same time.’ And according to retailer, John Lewis – multi-masking is a popular trend with sales of facial masks increasing by a whopping 187% in the past few weeks during lockdown.

‘Multi-masking draws on Eastern beauty practices and philosophies like theKorean 10-step regime,’ says Luzon. ‘It ensures every part of your skin is getting the nourishment, hydration and purifying it requires.’

There are two different ways you can multi-mask, according to Debbie Thomas, laser expert and founder of D Thomas Clinic. ‘You can multi-mask by using two to three masks at the same time but on different areas of the face, for example a detoxifying clay mask on an oily T-zone, a hydrating mask for cheeks and a firming mask for the neck. Alternatively, you can use one mask and then immediately apply a second mask, for example an enzyme exfoliating mask to remove dead skin cells, followed by a plumping mask which will now be able to penetrate deeper into the skin.’

However you choose to multi-mask, read on to discover our experts top tips and tricks…

Step by step, what’s the best way to multi-mask?

Preparation is key. ‘Cleanse your skin first,’ instructs Luzon. 'And If you're not using a mask containing acids or enzymes for exfoliation then you should exfoliate as well,' advises Thomas. It’s important to slough away dulling dead skin cells before applying thick, hydrating masks so they can really penetrate the skin.

Next, check the face mask instructions. 'Look at timings as some may say five mins while others 20-30 mins,' suggests Thomas. 'Apply the longest leave-on one first, then apply the next one at the relevant time.' So if one mask is 20 mins and the next 10 mins, you wait 10 mins after applying the first to apply the second so they are due to be removed at the same time. 'If you are doing a double mask (one then the next) apply the cleansing, detoxifying, exfoliating one first before applying the hydrating, plumping, brightening mask second,' instructs Thomas. This is because the first mask prepares the surface so the second mask can get better penetration.

Now you need to assess your skin so you can apply the right mask to the right area. ‘Oily skin tends to look and feel greasy and is more prone to spots,’ says Luzon, ‘whereas dry skin can appear flaky and tight after cleansing.’

Which face masks should you apply where?

Choose your masks carefully. ‘The skin around our eyes is extremely fragile and thus more susceptible to showing signs of ageing,’ says Luzon. Opt for a mask that’s targeted for the delicate eye area like the Mimi Luzon 24K Pure Gold Eye Treatment, £195, which promotes collagen production and cell renewal for a lifting and plumping effect. Or, for a cheaper alternative, try the KNC Beauty Eye Mask, £18 for 5, infused with rejuvenating retinol and plumping collagen.

‘In oily or more spot prone areas like the T-zone and chin, apply a clarifying clay mask,’ recommends Luzon. We love Aurelia Probiotic Skincare Brightening Anti-Pollution Mask, £58, formulated with pink clay to purify and decongest pores.

Our cheeks and high points of the face tend to be drier, so apply a nourishing mask in these areas like Drunk Elephant's F-Balm Electrolyte Waterfacial, £44, packed with hydrating vitamin F fatty acids and powerful antioxidants to protect the skins barrier.

Top tip? 'Listen to your skin as there are times it will behave differently,' says Thomas, 'sometimes you'll need two or three masks and other times you'll only need one. And always follow the directions for each individual mask.'
