While the red carpets of awards season tend, beauty-wise, to be tasteful to the point of homogeneity (a burnished smokey eye here, a dusty pink lip there, with the occasional flash of scarlet, graphic cat's eye flick or Lady Gaga appearance to break things up), if the Met Gala has a beauty ethos, it's 'anything goes.' Especially, it seems, this year: celebrating the work of Comme des Garcons' reclusive designer Rei Kawakubo, the theme 'Art of the In-Between' legitimised the most experimental of looks (even Jaden Smith carrying his own newly shorn hair...)
From Cara Delevingne's shimmering silver buzz cut (as we said, anything goes on the first Monday in May) to Blake Lively and Lily Rose Depp's more classic glamour, these are some of our favourite beauty looks from the night...
Kendall Jenner
While it was Kendall's nearly-naked dress (fashioned from 85,000 handpainted crystals by La Perla Haute Couture) that inevitably grabbed the headlines, it's only fair to give her hair and make-up some love, too. The Estée Lauder spokesmodel has finessed her red carpet formula: radiant, dewy skin, barely there eye make-up and a bold lip. This time, she was sporting Estée Lauder's Pure Colour Envy Sculpting Lipstick in Carnal, a punchy orange-red shade she created with the brand.
Emily Ratajkowski
If anything can persuade us to swap our black kohl for jewel tones, it's this bold look from Emily Ratajkowski. Matching the peacock hues of her sequinned Marc Jacobs gown with a burst of blue, green and gold smudged over and under her lash line, the model makes a strong case for colourful liner, paired with sleek, glossy waves in a simple centre part. Zendaya
She's still in her teens, but Zendaya is already a red carpet veteran. For this year's Met Gala, the triple-threat former Disney star teased out her natural curls to perfection. Make-up wise, she matched the orange tones of her print Dolce and Gabbana gown to her tangerine lipstick and kept her statement brows bold.
Zoe Kravitz
The most modern way to wear an Audrey-esque pixie crop? Bleached blonde and super-gamine, a la Big Little Lies star Zoe Kravitz. With her hair (and her dramatic pink and black structural gown) doing the talking, the rest of her look was kept simple.
Elle Fanning
Another star to opt for a minimal look, both in terms of the simplicity of her pale blue Miu Miu gown and her pared-back make-up, Elle Fanning opted for fresh-faced radiance, with just a touch of pink on the lips and bambi lashes. Scaling down from last year's sky-high pony tail, she wore her blonde hair in a simple, centre-parted updo, adorned with a vintage-style jewelled headband.
Selena Gomez
Also joining the bold eye brigade was Selena Gomez, who took her look back to the 80s (in the most stylish way possible) with a graphic flash of bright pink, offset with simple make-up and her newly angular bob with a touch of balayage towards the ends. Lily Rose Depp
On the 'less is definitely more' end of the Met Gala beauty spectrum, we present Lily Rose Depp. Already a Met veteran at 17 years old, the aspiring actress and Chanel ambassador offset her embroidered dress (a piece from her brand of choice's 2000 Haute Couture collection, it's as old as she is) with the ultimate eyeliner flick, a barely-there glow on the cheekbones and nude lips, her hair pulled back into a messy chignon.
Priyanka Chopra
Is echoing the glimmer of your statement earrings with your eye make-up the way to go when it comes to red carpet beauty? If actress Priyanka Chopra's Met Gala dramatic look is anything to go by, then yes. Make-up artist Pati Dubroff blended the Metalik Pewter shade from Laura Mercier's Editorial Eye Palette Intense Clays (£38, www.spacenk.com) around her eye line, with an extra pop of MAC Pigment in Platinum (£18, www.maccosmetics.co.uk) in the centre of the lid, while her brows were sculpted with Laura Mercier's Sketch and Intensify Pomade and Powder Brow Duo (£20, www.spacenk.com)
Cara Delevingne
As the accepted saying goes: if you've got a perfectly shaped head, shave all your hair off and spray said head with silver paint and a smattering of sequins. After chopping off her platinum crop entirely (for her role in the forthcoming Life In A Year, opposite fellow Gala goer Jaden Smith), Cara quite rightly decided that the steps of the Met were the perfect setting to channel her inner cyborg. Kudos for sheer commitment to a theme (plus, it sets off the famous eyebrows, no?)
Blake Lively
Spotted: Serena van der Woodsen making a return to the steps of the Met. Blake opted for a simple but radiant look - bronzed smokey eyes, plenty of highlighter and lips in barely-there pink - that couldn't help but recall her Gossip Girl character. With her hair swept up into a high ponytail, all attention was on her mis-matched sapphire earrings (all 82 carats of them), the deep blue a nod to the dramatic feathered train of her Atelier Versace gown.
