Moiré - roll it over your tongue, even the name of this rippled silk sounds luxurious. Derived from the French word for water, 'moirer', it’s a decadent fabric that’s taken on a rock’n’roll punch for spring.
This season, designers from Marine Serre to Rotate are embracing the uniqueness of this silk. From mini-dresses with ballooning 80s sleeves to calf-length flares in an unapologetic lime green, the wave-like texture that organically spreads across this flocked fabric isn’t the only thing that makes this trend standout.
In practice, moiré makes an outfit look instantly more expensive. In part, this is due no doubt to its long association with evening wear (in the Victorian age and earlier). Ironically, for SS19, this lustrous fabric is pulled into the daylight as it patterns Ellery ankle boots and H&M’s slouchy trousers.
Influencers have been upping the ante by wearing the moiré with even more exuberant fabrics, like cashmere sweaters and faux fur coats. The interplay of excess injects excitement into February’s dark grey days. Watch as we wear ours with a Saks Potts Foxy coat and a Simone Rocha headband. Over the top for daylight hours? Never.
