Is it possible to write about Julia Roberts without using the word ‘megawatt’? Probably, but I’m not even going to bother trying. That irresistible, cartoonishly wide smile is megawatt. Her earning power is megawatt (she was the highest paid actress in the world in the 1990s and early 200s). Her A+ List star power is megawatt.
Something else that Roberts possesses? A high-voltage command of fashion. Sure, sure, you are familiar with her many sensational style moments on screen – the thigh high boots ofPretty Woman fame, the beret and sunglasses in Notting Hill, the push up bras and mini skirts she wore in Erin Brockovich – but to her off-screen moments are equally deserving of the limelight.
In the ‘90s, Roberts proved herself to be an unpredictable red carpet dresser. She set the tone young – at just 23 – at the Golden Globes, where she won for her role in Steel Magnolias wearing an oversized, grey Giorgio Armani suit (which, apparently, she bought off the rack herself). She went all in, complementing the tailoring with a shirt and tie – there was no concession to Hollywood-pleasing sexiness here. See also the skirt suit she wore to the Globes the following year and the chocolate brown suit she wore to the Hook premiere in 1991.
Of course, Roberts isn’t just about tailoring. Alongside the Valentino haute couture gown (vintage, a very now move) she wore to pick up her Oscar in 2001, probably Roberts’ most famous red carpet dress was the red sequinned Vivienne Tan number she wore to the Notting Hill premiere in 1999. Although that look became about so much more than the dress, thanks to the flash of armpit hair she revealed when gleefully waving to fans and photographers. It’s amazing (and, sad, really) that this is still surprising to see now (it still made a statement when Emily Ratajkowski did the same last year). If you’re worried your normal grooming routine has hit a stumbling block right now, then let the moment but on your mental lockdown moodboard. If Julia Roberts doesn’t care about it, why the hell should you?
Indeed, Roberts’ ‘90s style proves she is the original queen of IDGAF dressing. Alongside the gown-shunning tailoring, there are also super low-slung baggy trousers (on trend big time for SS21), insouciant cardigans (worn, Katie Holmes style, slipping off one shoulder), cowboy boots, layered jackets and playful mini dresses tomboyishly teamed with white socks and monk-strap shoes. She even makes the compelling case for wearing a waistcoat with nothing underneath.
In a year when we’ve all reconsidered our style direction, there are many lessons to learn from Roberts. The only one that really matters, however, is this: why follow the rules when you could write them? Now if that isn’t a megawatt move, I’m not sure what is.
Julia Roberts' Best 90s Style Moments
Julia Roberts, 1990
Never afraid to be bold on the red carpet, Roberts steered clear of a gown at the 1990 Golden Globes (where she picked up the Best Supporting Actress award for her role in Steel Magnolias), opting instead for a mannish Giorgio Armani suit.

We'd be smiling like that too if we looked this good in a waistcoat. Another tailoring hit, at the Young Guns II premiere in 1990.
Julia Roberts, 1991
Another Globes, another win (this time for Pretty Woman), another suit - this time around a pin-striped skirt suit.
Julia Roberts, 1991
It's not a stretch to image Zoë Kravitz or Chloë Sevigny wearing this perfect summer get-up in 2021.
Julia Roberts, 1991
For the premiere of Hook - in which she played Tinkerbell - Roberts sprinkled some magic on this chocolate trouser suit. The pocket square is a delicious detail.
Julia Roberts, 1991
With her then-fiancé Kiefer Sutherland at the Oscars in 1991 - nominated for her role in Pretty Woman - Roberts wore a Victoriana-inspired dress. The shock of blonde hair adds a punkish twist.
Julia Roberts, 1991
For the Sleeping with the Enemy premiere she wore a patchwork suede skirt and pearls. Simple but effective, like the best '90s looks. The less said about those jeans, though, the better...
Julia Roberts, 1991
Oh to be the woman who can throw on two baggy blazers and a pair of cowboy boots and not make it look like a mistake.
Julia Roberts, 1993
Put this 1993 look - low slung, baggy pants and clashing stripes - on your SS21 moodboard immediately.
Julia Roberts, 1993
A different partner - Roberts married country star Lyle Lovett in 1993 - but her love for a statement suit remains intact.
Julia Roberts, 1995
Those tailored leather blazers everyone went crazy for on Instagram last year? Roberts did it first.
Julia Roberts, 1997
The cardigan nonchalantly thrown off the shoulder trick worked for Katie Holmes, and it worked for Roberts too at a concert in 1997. This paisley slip would be a perfect addition to your summer wardrobe.
Julia Roberts, 1997
She wore a sparkly mini dress to the My Best Friend's Wedding premiere in 1997.
Julia Roberts, 1998
A masterclass in the art of understatement, she wore a pared-back burgundy dress to the BAFTA Awards in 1998. When you're this A-list you don't need anything fussy.
Julia Roberts, 1998
For the Stepmom premiere in 1998, Roberts wore a strapless bubblegum gown. The furry stole ups the movie star credentials.
Julia Roberts, 1998
Consider this a lesson in how to dress down sequins: just add a tank top and simple knitwear.
Julia Roberts, 1999
Isn't it amazing that over 20 years later this look from the Notting Hill premiere still feels like a bold move? The red sequin dress was by Vivienne Tam, but it was Roberts' flash of under arm hair that caused women around the world to do a little fist pump.
