The fashion world loves a hybrid term. In the past we’ve gone crazy over jeggings, skorts and even shackets, and now there’s a new ridiculous name to dissect.
Introducing the drouser. Yep, you guessed it, it’s a dress and pair of trousers in one, and the item is having a bit of a moment.
Spotted on the catwalk at Givenchy, Ellie Saab and Valentino, the combo style has been interpreted in a number of ways. At Givenchy and Ellie Saab, the incorporation of trousers gives the classic glitzy gown a fresh and unexpected twist, while at Valentino the vibe is much more laid-back with floaty maxi dresses worn over loose fit pants.
For celebrities looking to make a statement, the drouser provides the perfect alternative to the standard floor-skimming gown. Much like wearing a jumpsuit or tux on the red carpet , wearing a drouser gives your get-up instant cool-girl appeal.
Naturally, a number of celebs have already jumped on the drouser bandwagon. Gigi chose an Atelier Versace drouser for the Fashion Awards in December, while Emma Watson is a longterm fan of the look (our favourite being the above Osman creation she wore to the White House Correspondents' Dinner last April). A shout out must also go to Rosamund Pike who wore the above Givenchy drouser with aplomb at the premiere of A United Kingdom.
While the drouser is perfect as statement eveningwear, it can also be incorporated into a casual wardrobe too. A number of designers showcased the drouser silhouette within their resort collections - this time with a more laid-back feel.
Arguably more of a dress-over-trousers situation than the strict drousers spotted on the aforementioned catwalks, this rendition is definitely more accessible and wearable.
Best of all, it’s super easy to recreate at home. Take your cue from Ellery and pair a long-sleeved floral dress over slim-fit black trousers, or dress down a cocktail dress with dark demin like Osman.
This sleek styling trick has been gaining traction over the past year, and street style stars aplenty have favoured the look.
Whether you layer a slip over white denim, or breathe some new life into a bejeweled mini with the addition of a pair of flared jeans, this winning pairing will bring a sense of newness to your outfit without even having to hit the shops. Fashionable and frugal, what more could you want?
