Christopher Kane has a knack of reinventing the wheel, be that a simple white shirt suddenly taking on a fetishistic twist or a leather biker jacket transforming into a demure embroidered evening coat. For his AW19 collection, which he showed atLondon Fashion Week, he took the IT bag to task. The result was strikingly familiar to the pencil cases we had aged 12.
Banking on nostalgia (a powerful sales force that drives the appeal for heritage brands and the reunion of bands like the Spice Girls and Take That), Kane transformed those sensory gel cases into luxury clutches. In the 90s these accessories resided in our backpacks alongside gel pens and bendy rulers, in 2019 these PVC accessories reflect the mercurial nature of modern life.
Referencing the label’s current spring collection, which celebrated the ‘Joy of Sex’, these rudely red and lewdly blue accessories feel a little pervy. (Or is that just us?) Coincidently, from the graphic t-shirts to the sheer lace party dresses, the brand's AW19 message read as a celebration of the irreverent side of fetish culture, with subversive references to balloons, rubbers, flasher coats and peek-a-boo lace running throughout the collection.
As ever, Christopher Kane is able to deliver a discourse on the nuanced nature of desire. And, guess what? We really desire those clutch bags!
