Even Victoria Beckham has been leaning into comfort more recently. ‘I definitely wanted more “ease” in lockdown,’ she says. Don’t mistake ease for slacking, however. ‘I continued to work out nearly every day for the last 18 months and my Reebok collection is integral to this.’
The launch of the new Reebok x Victoria Beckham collection – her fifth drop for the sportswear giant – again fuses fashion and function, and couldn’t come at a better time, particularly for anyone in need of a motivation boost. Who wouldn’t perk up in a cropped padded jacket, ribbed leggings or French terrycloth hoodie? ‘I always aim to make my community feel like the best version of themselves,’ she says. ‘When it comes to sportswear, I design performance-led pieces that move with the body.’
One of her favourite items is the tennis dress with subtle cutouts – ‘which would look amazing both on and off the court’. Still, she hasn’t set her sights on rivalling Emma Raducanu just yet. ‘I’m not the most accomplished tennis player, but at least I’ll look the part!’ The capsule’s Zig Kinetica sneakers are inspired, in part, by a 1984 style from the Reebok archives (‘I definitely subscribed to the ’80s shellsuit trend and, as a dancer, I wore a lot of shiny lycra leotards!’) Those days are long behind her now and
in a nod to the chic uniform dressing Victoria loves – not to mention the efficiency necessitated by being a mother of four who helms her own business – pieces are intended to be worn as sets. ‘I still want to look “put together” when I work out. Designing in sets makes it easier to be gym-ready,’ she says.
Not that it matters if you don’t have any intention of actually breaking a sweat. ‘The lines are so blurred nowadays around workout wear versus daywear. I always want to design pieces that work for both. I could see myself wearing one of the pastel hoodies with a wide-leg jean, or over a midi,’ she says.
Self-care for Victoria isn’t so much an option as a non-negotiable. ‘I expect a lot from my body, so I need to look after it,’ she says. ‘I work out, eat healthily and take care of my skin.’ It doesn’t have to be hard work, though. ‘Harper and I often have fun giving each other face masks or reading together – both of which I consider to be self-care.’
