You may still be wondering when the next heatwave might arrive or packing for your summer holiday but when it comes to fashion, brands have turned their attention to next season.
The shops notoriously start taking deliveries of new season stock as early as, well, now, and it can feel pretty bizarre to see coats and boots filling the shelves when it’s only August. Topshop, however, seems to have reached a suitable compromise with its new IDOL collection, given that it’s Pre-Fall and is, therefore, full of pieces you can wear now and well into the colder season, too.
This is the third instalment of the IDOL range, which is Topshop’s slightly more premium collection created by design director Anthony Cuthbertson. There are nods to major new season trends – 80s influences, in particular – without anything feeling transient, something which is becoming more and more important as fashion attempts to reconcile itself with sustainability.
In fact, the new IDOL pieces feel timeless in their own way, with mixed print midi skirts, denim jumpsuits and paisley dresses all the sorts of things you’ll still be wearing in years to come. There’s a smattering of fabrics like leather and lace, too, making the collection feel high-end, without a high price. Some dresses are less than £50, leather ankle boots are £89 and some blouses are even under £20. But this is not throwaway fashion – it may be affordable but you can mix everything easily with your existing wardrobe, playing with print clashes and a mix of textures. Come autumn, you can layer polo necks under the slip dresses and pair chunky, oversized jumpers with the midi skirts.
You may be loathe to even think about buying outerwear right now, so this new offering feels like a good way to inject something new into your everyday outfits without prematurely embracing winter. Let’s hope there’s at least some more sunshine between now and then.
